its been a problem is usa for a long time.
4x4's are an easy target. easy to get to cats and as there are a lot of V engines means at least dual cats and sometimes 4 cats per vehicle.
a few minutes with a tube cutter is all it takes.

i'm told they would get $10 per cat and cost about $1000 to replace.

there is quite a business in making cages etc to block access to the cat.

I heard that the little french lunchboxes tend to have the most valuble cats. Not to give thieves advice but they'll probably just fall off anyway.
