  • Rear door drop down heavy

Hi the rear door is really heavy when it drops down on our N reg surf. Been told it could be the torsion spring.

Anyone any ideas if this is correct and where we can get one?

Sounds like the gas struts which hold the tailgate up are shot. Try Terry - ebay seller jap4x4part

N reg is the change over year for Surfs, is yours a 2nd Generation drop down tailgate or or 3rd Generation lift up rear door?

The 2nd gen tailgate is damn heavy, they have a spring underneath to help lifting, unfortunately they're in the line of fire from spray from the rear wheels and can rust, but replacing them is simple enough.

The 3rd Gen has gas struts like most hatchbacks and they're heavy doors too.

Pleasantly surprised how little effort is required to close my gen 2 tailgate.

Although of solid construction, substantial internals & h.r.w. closes with a satisfying clunk.

Thank you Mr Toyota. Painting the Surf with special lightweight burgundy was a stroke of genius

        ps.

          Tailgate

Thanks for the replies. It is a 2nd gen drop down so will try to get another spring.
