  • viscous fan isn't working

    ###### thing! I've had to unplug the aux fan sensor thingy to make the little electric fan run constant for now, but driving round town at low speeds the surf got up to temp, then the gauge sneaked above half way a mile from home! So I just drove steady. When I pulled up (aux fan sensor not unplugged at this point) I left the engine running, It was hot enough to need the fan to work for sure.

Stuck some paper into the fan blades and it didn't even put up a fight, just stopped and there was no feel Of resistance for it to get going. At this point I decided to get the aux fan to run constant till I sort it.

I don't making viscous fan run constant so I know for sure it's cooling. But how do I go about doing it? Cheers.
well, that was a bad idea!

Alternatively, I could over oil it so it's running lots. I have a r/c model shop near me. Can I get oil there and what oil do I ask for?

10,000 cst. You'll probably need two tubes.

Cool, so ask for 10000 cst and they should know what I mean. In terms of tubes, how many ml should I want, bearing in mind I want more than factory setting
well, that was a bad idea!

Iirc 3x18 ml tubes is "factory"
Use a good screwdriver to undo the coupling body.I used the bits from an impact driver.
It is pretty easy once it is all apart.
Drain and wash and flush out the old fluid and stick in your new fluid.
I set the thermo switch down a few degrees on mine.
I also had to mod the o ring to fit, scalpel and superglue, I also put a smear of rtv on the faces.
The amount of air mine pulled after was quite impressive.
As I had removed the bonnet seals it was causing eddies in the rain water along the bonnet lines...
            happy spannering Luke

Cool, I'll try that before locking it up then. How did you adjust the thermo switch?
well, that was a bad idea!

Pan of water (wok worked great)
                Thermometer and a screwdriver.
Saw what temperature it opened at and wound more tension into the thermo spring and rechecked it and it opened about 5 degrees earlier

Would filling the unit with silicon sealant, so that it's permanently in " lockup " be a way of dealing with this problem ? Other than possible overcooling, and the engine taking longer to reach operating temperature, would the be any drawbacks in doing this ?

Wouldn't the opening temperature on the fan be a bit of a red herring ? Surely the fan will only be effective when the thermostat opens, allowing coolant flow through the radiator. On a standard 'stat, this is 82 deg. Would the use of the legendary 71 deg Prado 'stat ( 90916-03121 ), be a good idea ?

I've got the 71 deg fitted and it has made a slight difference...for me it needs to be coupled with a larger core Ali Aussie rad...my next purchase. What me paranoid??..
                      .... Which was nice.

I could do with a new rad, what's this Aussie one you speak of? Bigger rad sounds nice! And does it have an atf cooler in the bottom?

. It was mentioned here awhile ago. Not cheap with puchase, postage and import tax. Pretty though.
