The power steering has a completely separate oil system to the auto gearbox and a leaking steering box will not affect the autobox oil temperature or it's operation and vice versa!

(Sorry Tash, I ploughed in without reading your comment properly)

Sorry I thought the two systems were linked as it was all ATF...

Ok so the steering box has its own ATF and the auto-gearbox also has its own ATF?

The light on the dash is related to the ATF fluid in the gearbox? And this is also seperate from the engine oil?

In essence there are 3 seperate oil systems?

My wife left me for my inapproriate use of well known sayings and phrases and for not understanding them properly.

        And vice versa.

Thank you... so the ATF light is saying the gearbox oil is too hot?

That is strange as it happens when I'm not goin thru the gears on the motorway, but I guess it does change up and down a bit and at that speed the heat must be high...

Anyway I guess maybe I should fit the oil cooler to the gearbox transmission fluid system

Silly question, is there enough oil in the gearbox? And, is the oil good, as in been changed relatively recently?

Thats actually not a silly question. Since I got it a month ago, I checked the oil and its on the top mark, however its in the garage now and an oil change is part of the work being done so it may help having fresh oil and filter...

I'll wait until I see that ATF light again... if I do see it, then I'll fit the cooler. If not... I probably will still fit the cooler coz it'll look mean in place of the fromt grill

                  No worries

As for Alex...whenever I have been towing using an auto I 've found that the transmission works really hard,it sounds as if it's constantly "searching" for the right gear as it adjusts to the load, speed, incline etc. Hence it does get hotter than normal. In the surf the ATF fluid is cooled in the bottom 1/4 of the rad. This means that a very hot ATF could raise your coolant temperature too, which you really don't want in this type of engines. The aftermarket ATF cooler will fix that. Good luck

Oh dear! Yeah def dont want the over heating ATF fluid causing the water temp to over heat... that'd be very bad.

I have an oil cooler from a Range Rover which will do the job and sounds like it'll be pretty easy to plumb in if the ATF fluid isd already plumbed to a cooler of sorts.

                    Great advice thank you
