  • I didn't realise.......

How much I missed pottering with my surf.
    Today I have...

Drained & refilled front & rear axles.
    Drained & refilled centre diff.
    Greased all nipples "fnar fnar".
Flushed & refilled coolant with "genuine toyota red" lol.
Checked all brakes, bushes & ball joints, "all good".
Had about 15 cups of tea in between.

TBH everything wasn't in bad condition but I like to know its right. Tomorrow it's under seal, make a new parcel shelf & a few other bits & bobs & she will be in tip top condition.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Not sure what to use this time round as underneath isn't in bad nick, only a little surface rust on axles & suspention but other than that it's solid.

Hmmm. I've been pondering the final coat and I don't like the sound of the tacky stuff (waxoyl added etc). Tetroseal do some stuff but I can't seem to find out if it too is tacky.

Staying on topic...how did you find the diff draining and refilling?

REALLY need to do mine (gen 2).

Used tetroseal in the past with decent results & long lasting, might use it this time round actually.

Diff & axle oils are easy apart from when I muller'd the rear axle filler nut.
All you need to do is locate the drain & refill nuts, always undo the filler nut first cos if you do the drain nut & empty the diff/axle & find that the filler nut won't come out then your stuffed.

Once both nuts are undone & oil is drained just put drain nut back in & fill through top nut until it start to over fill & that's it just put the nut back in & your done.

Gathered as much but the filler first is a top tip! Obvious now you mention it. Thanks

Seems GL5 SAE 75W-90 is the golden stuff for most of the things on the surf.

It's worth it though as I will never need to do it again for as long as I've got the truck.

                            Yup...you are totally right.

Glad I found that 5L for £19, though. It was looking like an expensive job doing both the diffs and all the rest etc.

Anyways...thanks for the top plug tip...I'll never forget that one
