  • What to check?

    Hi all

Sorry not been active for a while

Long story short, had to lay the old 1991 hilux up for the past year due to financial issues etc. but was left on mates farm regular started and driven forward n back.

Looks like i might be getting the old girl back for the summer
Obviously got to check over the brake pipes and leaks etc.
But is there anything major i need to do check before shes back??
Bare in mind she hasnt gone above 10mph. The tires are all pumped up and all ok

    Thanks All

    Hi,

Not specific to the Surf this, but if it's got non-synthetic engine oil in it, change it...it turns mildly acidic over time.

If it's auto and you get gear shift issues that were not there before then consider cleaning the valve body...I've had auto's that sat for 6 months sediment up in the valve body and gum up the valves that control the fluid flow.

Brake fluid might be worth changing to, that slowly absorbs water...

      Ok thanks for that

Shes a 1991 Manual never been out of 2nd gear past year.
Will change the brake fluid, power steering looks a bit brown too
      What about the timing belt??
Will change the oil and filter, and fuel filter as she is low on diesel

I'm not Surf expert, so can't really comment specifically, but I hate cam-belts!

If you don't know how long since the last change would be well worth checking it's condition....nothing worse than lunching an engine...I've had friends who have not done there's in time, and man that's expensive! My brothers old 944 cost him £4,000 for the want of £150 worth of parts.

Check the tensioner bearing too if you do, not just the belt.
