  • 2nd Car

Due to a change in circumstances SHMBO now requires a different vehicle for her commute.
The Surf will be doing about 500 miles a week is going to be costing a small fortune, plus I really don't want her racking up that amount of miles on my baby.

    Budget wise about 2K

The commute will be a quick blast up the motorway plus some twisty country roads.
    Ideally diesel 4 dour.
Have been starting to narrow down the search to something along these lines.

    Any horror stories or suggestions?

    Why a diesel?
Small petrol engined cars give the same economy and are a lot cheaper and easier to fix.(engine wise)

p.s. Thats a Vectra in a shell suit!

Do you mean a small car or a small engine ?

She also was looking at Merc convertibles

Sorry, I said 'small' before looking at your link.

Re-read post #2 an omit the word small.

She does not want a little hatchback.

Just done the last couple of months in my surf - 300 miles a week , £100 diesel a week.

I bought a focus 1.8tdci to use for commuting - initial back road + motorway runs it seems to be doing about 46mpg. Should be better once I work out whether to use the motorway all the time, or back roads all the time.

I like the car - seems pretty solid and easy to work on. Drives / handles nicely too. Parts are pricey on the engine as it's a common rail.

Dunno if she'd class a focus as a 'little hatchback' though ?

Fuel consumption's crap on that Focus - I used to get well into the 60's without any hassle !

              (600 mile per week, mainly A34, M4)

Life is too important to take seriously !

I should qualify the little hatchback statement, that is direct quote from shmbo.
I am sure the Focus is a perfectly good car, but not what she is after.

That excellent ! - the handbook lists 62.8 non urban so hopefully mine will improve if I start using the motorways more. (I have been revving it quite high on the back roads) tbh I'll be pleased if it gets over 50mpg. I've only driven it to work and back 8 times so far so have only worked out the mpg on one fill up.

edit - apologies for going off topic .

                    Mazda Xedos 9 Miller.

Less than a grand, all the toys, goes like stink, uses bugger all fuel.

I had one and am still gutted that I sold it.
