  • Front diff & 12mm allen key

    Folks,

before I buy one to change the oil in the Front Diff on my 1996 Gen3 3.0l Hilux Surf...Do both the fill and drain require a 12mm allen key ?

    Cheers & ATVB

If I recall correctly. the filler plug is 12mm but the drain plug is 10mm on the front diff.

I bought socket type hex keys that fit onto a ratchet handle, rather than relying on allen keys, as the plugs were very tight. In fact the drain needed chiselling out in the end, after I rounded off the inside! The plug has quite a wide flange and took many good hits with lump hammer & chisel to break the surface area join against the body of the diff. However, I could then spin the remains of the plug out with fingers.

With this in mind - worth getting new plugs and washers before you start the job. I paid about £10 for genuine Toyota new drain plug & washer. Imagine the filler plug would be similar cost.

    Good luck

      Cheers - thanks for that.

Where did you source the new plug ?

      Cheers
