  • Diff code confusion

    Folks,

I am in the process of changing all of the fluids on my 1996 3.0l Gen 3 and am totally confused with regards to the different diffs and oils to be used.

I have looked at the Vin plate under the bonnet and the diff code spread sheet and A02A does not seem to correspond to those noted !

How do I work out if I need LSD oil or that for a standard set up ?

    Cheers + ATVB

The simplest way to check is to jack both rear wheels off the ground, transmission in neutral, handbrake off, turn one wheel by hand and if the opposite side wheel turns in the same direction you have a limited slip diff.

Have a look at your diff, mine has a wee label on it saying its an LSD diff. Im probably wrong but I think all 3rd gen SSRGs had LSD. or have a look at this

On mine the sticker is about 10mm x 25mm its on the back of the diff on the offside. ( by back of the diff , I mean the bit you see as you look under the car from the rear)

Ah - mine doesn't look like that !!! Super clean !!

I think it has either come off or dropped off with a flake of rust !!!

I shall have to try jacking it up and trying the wheel test...

Am I wrong that putting LSD oil in a standard diff is not an issue but putting standard diff oil in a LSD affects the operation of the LSD itself ??

              Cheers + ATVB

Jacked it up...turned one wheel and the other either didn't move or just moved very slightly in the opposite direction.

So I guess either no LSD for me or it is knackered !

The silver lining is normal diff oil is a fair bit cheaper than LSD oil when I swap it all over for new !

                No biggie.

                Cheers & ATVB

I feel such a dunce asking all the questions, but do you have to perform the same test on the front to determine if that is LSD ?

I am getting a bit confused about this and the different oils (3 types) required for the change.

                  Cheers + ATVB

also check the vin plate on the bulkhead, if the final drive code ends in a 5 then you should have an LSD rear axle.

The front diff won't be a LSD unless the previous owner fitted one.

That applies to 1st/2nd gens, but there's different codes on the 3rd gen's VIN plate.

That seems different from the Rough Trax pdf advice for KZN185

Hence my confusion.......I have determined I don't have rear LSD (see above posts) so can use Standard Gear Oil 80W/90 2.8L ?

For the front I seem to need to determine if that is LSD or not as well...?
                          and then either
                          Standard Hypoid Gear Oil 80W/90
LSD Castrol Hypoy 90 LS oil (or equiv)

The transfer box seems simple at least 75W/90 1.4L

The next job starts this weekend and that only leaves the coolant before the MOT on 1st July.

I am really enjoying this steep learning curve and once again thank you all for your patience and help.
