  • 3rd gen overpriced

Hi I have owned 3 hilux surfs over the passed 10 years after my last one was written off off by someone running into the back of me I have been searching for a decent 3rd gen and having trouble finding one. Help lol
do I buy a 2005 Isuzu rodeo instead for 5k anyone got one,

Are the 3rd gens overpriced ?

Just sold my 3rd gen for £3250. It was a good example (mechanically sound, solid underneath, virtually rust-free and a good service history). Looking around Autotrader and the like, I think I was probably lucky to get that price. £3000 tops for one like that, I think. Hope that helps. Reckon if you spent £5K on a 3rd gen it should be pretty much show-room condition and well below average miles.

....unless it runs on Kryptonite, then you're probably looking at about £6995.

I can not find anything around £3k and to be honest would pay a bit more for a really mint one but looking round i have seen people asking £6500 for a 14 year old car private sale and then you look at isuzus less than 10 year old for similar money. Even shogun sports seem a good deal by comparison....but dont want a shogun want a mint 3 rd gen lol

I know what you mean, Hilly. Maybe the price of the Surfs just reflects their reliability and desirability. A Nissan X-Trail suits our needs more (unfortunately) and looking at the price of those, I can get a much younger one with less miles for the same money as the Surf I've just sold. BUT (and it's a big but), will it cost more in the long-run due to repair bills? I would guess that it probably would. Reckon the investment in a Surf is a worthy one. Only reason I sold mine is because it doesn't have Isofix for our baby's seat. There's no price on safety.

You probably saw it in the "For Sale" section anyway. Blue '97 manual 3rd gen. It was up for £3995 (realise that was probably a tincey bit over the top now!)

Did you consider a Rav 4?

No, are they worth a look, then?

We're looking for a reliable 4WD (that can be driven on dry Tarmac in 4WD, if need be), with high ground clearance (for the snow drifts in these parts during winter), mid 30's MPG upwards (so it can be used as a daily driver) with Isofix (for the baby's seat). It doesn't need to be properly off-road capable as we'll only be driving it on the road. Just wish the Surf had Isofix; it ticks all the other boxes apart from fuel economy but I could live with 27MPG.

Yes, they are permanent 4WD with a diff lock switch on the dash.
For your budget, look at the 2nd generation Rav 4 five door version, it's like a baby Surf but because it's sold over here, I guess it will have the ISO fix system?
