  • Any Ideas???

Further on from my "expansion tank boiling" scenario.

Lately been a job to start when cold, put this down to glow plugs, checked them and they are ok.

    Now this.

thought it was using a bit of water so kept topping it up (via cap)

did a flush today, washed all crap out sucessfully "burped" system

Running ok. however, when I have gone back and checked level it was low.

Topped it up, checked expansion tank and there is an awful lot more coolant in there than what there was when I re-filled it.

    Why no sucky backy?

    I had a similar problem - again.

My mechanic has just replaced the radiator cap/thermostat.

    Seems fine now.

could well be a duff cap also check hose to and in the expansion are not perforated preventing it from sucking back the coolant.

If you're really unlucky, the reason may be a small leak in your head gasket. I had a 1st gen that had this problem; it ran fine, but with less coolant than it was supposed to. A new head gasket fixed it.

A pretty reliable test is to have an MOT garage test the air getting into your radiator for exhaust fumes, using their exhaust gas analyser. If there's no exhaust gas there your problem most likely isn't the head gasket.
