It was a table saw. Table saw was faulty. Investigation carried out. Employer admits blame. Claim lodged.

No idea. Probably avoidable though. I have used unguarded table saws and band saws plenty of times and not managed to do that.
I'm not having a pop at your mate, though. It just seems that the h&s culture has had the reverse effect to that intended and that people now see their employer as responsible for their safety, which they are legally, and forget to look after themselves. I'm sure your mate is kicking himself for cutting his own thumb off, but a large part of the blame lies with a culture that puts a monetary value on people hurting themselves and making a claim, rather than genuinely helping them to avoid accidents.
