Does anyone on here know how they work? I have a technical question regarding the inner workings of them.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Place your basket of shopping on the little platform at the side of the machine and press start. Then swipe your items, one at a time, so the machine can read the barcode. When finished select your payment type (cash or card), pick up your shopping, take the receipt and leave the store. That's about it really.

    You're welcome.

      That is technical.

But you forgot about the loyalty card scan. How does that work?

Don't see how there's any difference between them and the normal PoS scanner system - only they get you to do the work rather than pay a till operator.

A friend of mine has been sacked because of something their employer says is impossible, we know it is possible but need to be able to prove it. Hence I asked if anyone had any idea how they worked, internally.

I believe they sum the scanned item weights as use this to check what is placed in the bagging area
When we last used one the cashier placed new bags on the hanger whilst we were scanning stuff and the system threw a wobbler and had to be reset

Get your friend to threaten legal action / court. The employer will have to put together some evidence and the 'facts' will out then. Not enough info to be able to advise on whether what they are saying is likely or not.

The tills will scan what has been placed before the reader.
The weigh bed will check this weight against the information from the barcode.
Dodgy coins or notes will be rejected.
Any disputed cash put into the machine can be checked by a supervisor, this will be logged in the cash count.

Not wanting to give any one any ideas but yes the tills are not perfect and there are a few ways to confuse the system.
Most self scan tills have CCTV recording, will that help your friend?

The ones ive used always seem to have bags touching the scales at the back....So at what point are the scales 'tared' what if you use your own bags on the scales?

It gives you the option to have your own bags on the scale first before you start scanning. it must auto-tare.

Unfortunately, an employer only has to have 'reasonable belief' that the indiscretion was committed, there is no need to prove it.

What happened was that a customer forgot to take their cashback, my friend took it and put it in a 'safe place' to wait for the customer to return for it. They forgot about it and left to go home. Three days later, they were accused of stealing it, they went back to where the money had been left; but it had fallen through a hole, they looked under the desk and found the money. It was handed back, but as there was a different from normal £10 note in the bundle, my friend was sacked for stealing it and replacing it later. We need to prove that the errant £10 note could have been given out as cashback. The company says it could happen, but on 'very, very, rare occasions.
