Bad bad bad mpg!

Lots of factors as people have said. One thing I would check which hasn't yet been mentioned is if all four wheels roll freely. I had a sticky rear brake which would have dropped my MPG to a silly amount. Easily fixed and MPG is back up into the mid 20s, depending. Free wheeling hubs also have proved to give me an additional four MPG on a motorway run.

I usually get about 16 or 17mpg, had it under fifteen a few times. But 9mpg seems impossibly low unless you have a problem or you're calculator is busted.

The speedometer might be bang on, mine is with 33s, but maybe not the odometer, mine is in Ks and is pretty accurate.

If I wanted to be exact I'd drive a route with a sat nav and compare the mileage, start with full tank and fill the tank up when you're done. Then do the math, convert the fuel litres into gallons and the distance into miles if you're odometer is in kms. 1 gallon is 4.55 litres, 1 mile is 1.61km

If you're calculations still come up with 9mpg something is wrong.

Is you overdrive working?

The split hose won't help, or maybe a vacuum hose that has come off.

If you have BIG tyres, your odometer may be out, use a pratnav to check it.

edit, just looked, they are only 33's won't be that far out.

Also I'm assuming a 65L fuel tank. What other sizes are a possibility?

What type/size of tyres does the truck have?
Are they correctly inflated (31 psi in the norm)
Any bolt-ons? (Roof rack, huge bullbars etc)
Good oil pressure?


And yes, the standard gauges are crap!

Correctly inflated BIG tyres, and low pressure is always halfway on the gauge once the engine is warm.

I will fill the tank to click on the pump and drive 100km then fill up again and see how much fuel it uses.

This is judging on fuel used from a full fill to half a tank. Are the fuel gauges on surfs notoriously bad?

I need to replace the air intake pipe as there is a small split. Could this be the cause?

I get 21/22 mpg overall including sometimes towing a trailer and mostly country roads and town driving, all of course at legal speeds!

Brim the tank then drive 100 miles then brim the tank again.

I'd run it right down till the fuel light comes on first then check it.
25mpg is what I get for general use.
