  • Tar removal - help please

The aluminium running boards on my Surf have quite a few specks of tar stuck to them which I'd like to remove. Some of the specks are quite large and thick. I have some "Bug and Tar Remover" which is ok for the small specks and would eventually get through the larger ones but would take forever and a day of rubbing, re-application, rubbing, re-application etc. etc.

Could anyone recommend a more "hard-core" tar remover that can be used which won't tarnish the finish on the running boards?

    acetone.
    Nail polish remover.
    uPVC cleaner.
    Autoglym intensive tar remover.

All the same stuff really. That Bug and Tar remover in a black spray bottle is pants. I've had stronger hangover breath than the active chemicals in that...

What about a caramel wheel... or will it just polish it in?

Look at the safety data sheet. This is GOOD STUFF!
I used it to take the glue off the remnants of the vinyl decals I had on my old truck

Brilliant. Thanks Wolfracer. Reckon you've saved me hours of hard work. I'll check out your suggestions. The Bug and Tar remover in the black spray bottle is the one I've been using.

Autoglym is good and you can use it on the paint too, I wouldn't put acetone anywhere near paintwork.

                Cheers

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys. Much of that stuff is already in the garage. I'll keep it clear of the paint

Unsuprisingly car paint is petrol proof (yes even on diseaseals)

A friend of mine had a time attack car covered in stickers that he wanted removing, he was too scared to use petrol incase it removed the paint..

Nitromors will usually remove anything from bare metal. But please be careful, and don't get it on paintwork, or bare skin.
