    photos of my engine

hey thanks for the help guys just made it home and had a look at my wagon.
this looks like it has a fuel heater but no fuse so i got a fuse 12v40 amp 4 prong will this do?
also as i was looking at the engine i noticed some oil/fuel just above the glow plug so i took a picture.not sure as its dark out there but do se anyone thing that my gasket might be leaking or on the way out?
am i looking at the right things here?
feels like my batteries are running low as when i turn the key it sounds like i'm loosing battery power.
    bugger and help

Dont look like you have a fuel heater, there may be a position for a fuse but you cant go plugging random fuses in. The leak looks like any other Surf to me. Have you inspected the glow plug fuse ??

well unfortunately when i purchased the car it had a home made fuse in it.which it still does I thought seeing as it works i might as well leave it there.
the home made fuse is made of the metal part of the old fuse with a bit of what looks like solder running across them in the centre.
i'm going to try and get a 80amp fuse for that tomorrow.
It is only in the mornings that the car splutters a bit with a lot of white smoke but this morning was the first time it did not start at all.
Unfortunately its pitch black outside and freezing.
I might take the batteries in tomorrow and charge them as they seem to be loosing power when i try and start the car.
i'm worried it might be the gasket

If the 80 amp fuse has blown check the buzz bar for the glow plugs is correctly assembled

i had a problem on my last surf where the insulated rail feeding the glow plugs had shorted onto the block it blew the 80a fuse instantly.it might be worth turning the engine over when its dark to see if you can see a spark shorting from the glow plug rail to the block.if this is the case then it will of course instantly blow your new glow plug fuse so have another spare one handy.alternatively you could do it the proper way with a multi meter to see if theres continuity between the rail and earth!

Could look like continuity anyway on a cheap meter, as the resistance of 4 glowplugs in parallel is gonna be pretty low.

Out of interest, what is the resistance of a cold plug?

Good glow plugs shiuld be less than 1 Ohm.

There's no fuel heater. Wiring on bottom of filter is the warning light, for the water in fuel sensor.

Ah OK, so rail to ground should be 0.25 ohms if ll four are OK. Most cheap meters would struggle to give a definite answer there then!
