  • Running on engine oil?

I know theres a good bit of information on here about running on veg oil...just wondered if anyone had tried cleaned used engine oil? or is it possible with the surf engines?

Just throwing the question out there lol my knowledge on it is limited, and dont think i would ever do it personally....but just wondered! lol

Unless the laws have changed I'm pretty sure its illegal to run a motor in the uk on engine oil. You're doing the government out of their fuel duty, they dont take to kindly to that.

plus engine oil is designed for lubricating and cleaning not burning, so the end result is probably going to be poor performance. Its like wiping your arse with old newspaper to save money not buying toilet paper, you save some pennies in the short term but start to stink.... or something... a wise man did once say...

They sell a filtering kit on the bay but to be honest I wouldn't use used engine oil as a fuel as old engine oil is apparently very acidic so could do god knows what damage to your engine.

You can run it on wmo (waste motor oil) but:

If HMRC catch you running wmo they will throw the proverbial book at you, also its nasty stuff to burn in an engine as it includes metal particles, soot and other sludge, not all of it will be removed by filtering.
A centrifuge may do it, but it will coke up your injectors like mad and has nasty emissions that are worst than diesel.

Veg is still best and even better is used veg oil. If you can make proper biodiesel its even better.

Best way to run on wmo is to look into pyrolysis. I was going to build one but I have no where to experiment and it can get rather dangerous!

          WHY would you do that?

Assuming it's just your own waste oil, it means you get to do maybe 20 miles for free every 3000!

Just a thought lol I do know someone working on cleaning it out with a centrifuge etc, but havent spoke to him in a while as to how far along hes come. Hes been running on veg oil for good few years now too.

I know it tends to be mostly old tractors etc it gets used on, maybe not worthwhile for normal car lol. True, most people wouldnt come across much oil, but for those like me that can easily see upto 50 litres of used engine oil a week and have to pay for it to be removed.. the mind does wander lol

Forget the truck, lob it in your central heating oil tank

                Waste Engine Oil

All the big ships run on waste engine oil. Nearly every garage charges you for disposal of engine oil and then sell it on and usually it ends up as fuel for the ship industry!

You need to check with SEPA with regards to burning wmo in a burner, I think you need a permit of some kind.
