  • I'm having a crisis!

Of the mid-life variety, or maybe it's just a hankering.

I keep being drawn to the Porsche 944 lately and I don't know why, this one in particular....

Anyone know what they're like to live with?
    What's wrong with me?
    Is it a good thing?

Am I just confused, or is it onset dementia?

There is only one question to ask, surely... Can you fit a lexus V8 in it? :P

They're supposed to be good. Got one in my club and it is well-liked and pretty reliable. 968 is better if you can afford one: we have one of those too...

Looks cheap enough to have a go for a year, and then get back what you paid after a good polish. Go for it!

          Or how about a 928 - a Porsche and a V8 to boot!

Yeah, been looking at 928s as well, some bargains out there too.

Why are they all in Scotland?

Buy a 928 if you really like fixing cars. You have been warned....

Yeah I know, it's unreliability of them thats making the 944 the favorite.
Not interested in the 924 at all.

Two went recently up here for over 8k. Both were showroom condition.

At that money Vince it will either get it out your system or become a very nice restoration project. Nice to work on something totally different on occasions.

                        Hi Vince,

                        I ran a S1 944 for over a year and loved it.

It was an early one ('83 a year newer than me lol) in Guards Red, pre oval dash

Mine was totally stock apart from 911 Recaros, and a rear skirt thing with slats (looked good, a bit different to the standard Turbo diffuser)

The handling was absolutely fantastic, the best handling car I've ever driven (I'm including my current E46 M3 of 5 years in this too) not so much grip, but to me handling is how a car feels when it is sliding (people confuse handling with road holding, pet hate lol)

                        Things to look out for:
The gearboxes go mushy and synchros fail (it's an 80s sports car, this will be no surprise)
The boot latches fail, meaning the tailgate likes to pop open, and if the gas struts fail and it falls on you it seriously ###### hurts, not because the glass lid is heavy (it's not) but because it has ###### spikes on each side!
The ventilation was a bit pony, but I believe this was fixed on the oval dash cars.

The ECU also failed on mine, which took me ages to diagnose, after replacing all sensors, but apart from that it was great. They seem very resistant against tin worm too (My main 80s sports car experience is from Toyotas here... and they, um, weren't)

Also the handbrakes are a bit dodgey (Inexplicably being on the right hand side of the drivers seat and not helped by the Recaros) I knocked mine off once getting out, and the car started to roll, luckily a nice chap in a 997 GT3 jumped out and caught it! - I'd have thought the Porsche guys would be snobby but the once I met were all nice...

All in all I loved it, I'd have another if I had the money and space, and put a decent engine in it (I wasn't a fan of the 2.5 I-4). Unfortunately they seem to be going up in price now, and I seem to be getting poorer! They still look great too!
