and whats the total lift as those are pretty much on the floor, standard.

Looking good btw, it's almost not ghey!
Pah, too much lift TBH, Spring over axle (about 6")
1 and a half inch body lift
    +2" Old Man Emu springs

It's crying out for bigger tyres, 35's at the mo, but first it needs stronger axles etc. etc.

You know the score, it's a project without an ending.

How's the standard gearing coping and what engine's in it?

          I've swapped in a high output 4.0 from a Cherokee (was a tired 4.2)

I think because it's auto, it handles the tyres OK, but the gearing needs changing when I do the axles.

I kept the Cherokee Autobox which is a bit longer than the old box, so now my rear prop is about a foot long and at a scary angle. I made one using ford CV joints but kept busting them, now I have made a telescopic one with a double UJ at one end.
The front half shafts are from a IMT tractor.

This thing is the reason my Surf is absolutely standard. It is nice to drive a comfortable 4x4 and be able to safely go over 60 and stop in a reasonable distance.

And these are about five or six years old, not seventeen like my Surf. The only good thing about Landrovers is their legal towing capacity.

On occasion drive a RR Sport and a Landcruiser which I would choose over my Surf for a daily but not off roading.

Back to the original question... there are few cars for the money that come anywhere near fulfilling my wants in a motor, so if the Surf went I would probably up my budget to either a Hilux Crew Cab (4 door), a Landcruiser or a large soft top Jeep (not a Cherokee)

I'd probably go for one of these.

Your fast running out of landrovers!

How about a nice Series 3?

That's an oxymoron. Its like saying, "how about enjoyable toothache".

As a real "left field" alternative, does anyone know anything about these? They were apparently built at the tahara plant, and looking at them, I suspect that they share something in common with the MkIV hilux....Comments, anyone?
