removing decals

has anyone attempted and successfully removed the decals from bodywork, if so how do you do it as mine are looking a little tatty so they are kind of letting the side down - no pun intended.

any ideas - without suggesting a respray!

Hi Thumper.
If they are vinyl type use a hair dryer on they first to
heat them up this will make it easier to pull off in bigger
bits.Once off gentle rubb with white spirits to remove any
glue left then maybe T cut to match as there may be colour
fadding.

It can be done, but it depends on how hard your glue has set. I tried the hairdrier method, but it wouldn't work for me, the glue just wouldn't soften and its a painstaking job. I opted to use a caramel wheel (because it smells like caramel) It took one wheel to do one side on my surf, this takes off the hardened glue and sticker. You do get some glue left, but a bit of elbow grease should get rid. Then I T-cut and polished and it looks fine. You do get a very faint outline because of the new paint underneath, but its negligble.

You should be able to get a caramel wheel from any auto paint suppliers or Gemini was able to get hold of one for you.

Heat gun and celulose thinners worked a treat for me. just allow plenty of time and be very careful not to scrape the (heated and thus, soft) paint off with yer finger nail.
