  • Stainless Exhaust - 3rd Gen Surf

    Morning folks,

I managed to sell my old Mk2 GTI yesterday, which is a story in its self, had it up for 2 weeks at £850, wanted £500 for it, loads of calls/texts, lots of which question why's it so cheap? I thought after 2 weeks I'll try and stick it up for £1200, new pics of it down at the wife's stables, first guy to call and come see it gives me £950

Anyway back to the Surf! The money is burning a hole in my pocket, I think a stainless exhaust is a bit of an investment when it comes to a vehicle you have intentions of keeping for a long time, so looking for suggestions, advice, places to go, and cost.

I know this has been covered numerous times, but was hoping someone has some more recent tales to tell, and pics to show

Unless someone puts me off for technical reasons, or the price is mental, I'm going to be looking at a twin pipe set-up, I'd like it to sound mean and meaty if possible.

Read briefly something on one of the places that do them about DPFs? Does the Surf have this? (Diesel Particulate Filter)

One other thing, I'm going to start doing the under seal today, I say start as the weather has turned naff, so probably just a bit of sanding, would it make sense to hold off on the exhaust until I've finished painting/spraying everything black?

Here's a couple I've 'stolen' from here, hope I'm not stepping on any toes, if I am let me know and I'll remove them, but its all in the name of the Surf!

    Thanks in advance

Hey Rog, deffo under seal first "that $hit gets everywhere".
I was looking at a SS exhaust when I had it & a few places up here would custom make one for me but the price ranged from £350-£850 depending on what I wanted.
Personally I like the twin look.

    P.S. how's she doing?
If its not broke don't fix it.

      Hi Si,

      She's doing great thanks

When it comes to the under seal stuff, is it a case of stick it everywhere, or are there some bits to definitely not go near?

I've been promising my son I'll take him 'off roading'. Just a couple of miles up the road from us is some unmade road that's a steep hill and not something you'd take a normal car up, so I thought that'll do him he'll be happy, we'll go up it and come back down, its about a mile or so long in total. Well I barely got 10m in and couldn't go any further, my son wasn't impressed, I had to reverse back out. All I did was press the 4WD button on the gear stick, the lights flashed for a bit then went solid, so off I went, but I was just spinning all over the place, bear in mind I have no clue what I'm doing with this 4x4 stuff

Perhaps I should have done some stuff with the gear stick, 4h or 4l or whatever? I've got a mate at work in our car share who's an avid off roader, drives a SWB Pajero or 'Paj' as he calls it, I drove in last week mainly to show off the new toy Anyway, on the way back he directed us up another off roady bit, another hill, nowhere near as bumpy as what I attempted, but she went up there with just the press of the button no worries, skidded about a bit to start with, but that was in 2WD (Rear). I'll have to get him to give me another lesson, pointers, etc

Twin pipes look idiotic on a diesel Surf in my opinion.

The system in the first pic would look at home on a V8 sports car.

God has spoken, I'll forget the whole idea then! :P

I like twin exhausts as its symmetrical, other than the look, I take it there's nothing technical you can advise me on, or more to the point when getting it done, something I might need to point out to the guys doing it? i.e. don't go to near the 'whaddya ma call it' type thing as the heat can cause issues or whatever...

          Thanks again

I know what you mean about the sports car look, but what ever style I go for, the end result should see me never needing to get a new exhaust. My Audi had one fitted by the previous owner in 2006 and it looked brand new, especially after I gave it a bit of a polish, sounded really nice too, but as you say different type of car, I'd not call my Coupe a sports car, but it looked the part.

The Surf does not have a DPF. If you want and like twin pipes get twin pipes. What Yoshie likes is his business not yours. What do you mean by "a long time" to keep a vehicle. Ive had my current surf for 5 yrs and in that time spent 100 pounds roughly on a back box, so stainless exhaust might look good and last forever but may not be money well spent.

You might be right Bogus, I don't think there's anything wrong with mine, I mainly like the look of twin exhausts, and the lasting for ever, sounding better, possibly other improvements, acceleration, mpg, are just added bonuses, but if its going to cost £600+ I'll probably look to spend my money more wisely, hence my other topic of How would you spend £1000 on your Surf?

As for a long time, I tend to keep cars for quite a while, I've had my Mk1 GTI for nearly 7 years now, the Mk2 GTI was 5 years, i.e not a year or so.

                Thanks

Surely making your surf look like something from an MTV rapper video is a technical enough reason not to do it, as well as my personal taste.

If I didn't have a Surf, I'd prefer that pink 1 than no Surf at all, at the end of the day it looks really tidy, nice wheels and great looking tyres, tidy bumpers too, I'd just camouflage it with a nice helping of mud!

That wasn't actually Brian's truck, Roger. If you study the photograph very carefuly, you'll see that it's Fred Flintstone's....
