  • 4 wheel drive issues

    Hello all,

Been using my 2nd gen 3.0 manual ssrv for some time now trouble free but last week when using 4wd i hit problems, when i went to go back to 2wd it seemed to struggle to engage eventualy it sorted its self out...
Out in it again today pressed for 4wd and nothing no click no dash light nothing only problem was i was in a field and needed it and got a bit stuck..
Ive checked vac hoses and found nothing obvious broken perrished or off slightly worried now so was wondering if anyone can advise...

    Many thanks

Does 4WD engage when you shift the transfer lever forward into low range?
(No need to press the button on the side of the shift lever, it switches automatically)

Did the 4wd light on the dash illuminate when you selected low range?

If not, then it's most likely a vacuum switching problem.
There's two vac hoses coming from the front diff's vacumm actuator, that go up to the two VSVs bolted to the inner wing by the fusebox. Swap these two hoses over at the VSVs and see if you get 4wd/light on dash.

              OK.
Check the 'Gauge' fuse in the fusebox in the cabin, behind the kick panel.

                ok ill check that out

what concerns me is last time i used it it struggled to go back into 2wd then this time it wont go into 4wd it sounds as if something started to fail then just failed a fuse would just go and thats it

                cheers swifty

Bl00dy stupid system, too much to go wrong just when you need it.
I do this to all my V8 conversions now....

also check if the front prop is locked in or not, you need to work out if its a t/case or front axle problem to start with.

                        Back again

I resorted to giving my surf to a mechanic mate to check over the 4wd problem basically he said he thinks its an electrical problem is it likely to be the ecu and is it worth getting a new one to try and rule it out???
ive done a continuity test from switch to ecu and all seems fine including the switch.. sorry if i sound a pain in the arse but im clutching at straws now and my mechanical and electrical knowledge is limited so is cash for garage labour fees..

                        many thanks swifty

Might be of some help, mine threw a wobbly a while back and had the same symptoms, button wouldnt do anything and no relay click, my front driveshaft was not free spinning by hand indicating that transfer case was jammed and sure enough I removed the cover disengaged it by hand, cleaned the mechanism gears and lubed them up and havent had a problem since.

Basicly it was stuck in 4wd in the transfer case and not telling the computer that it really was, unlikely its the same as yours as mines a bit of an odd glitch but still worth checking as a quick dismantle and clean beats having to pay for new parts.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on
Its a new truck, Because every parts been replaced

By any chance did you change a tyre or put on a spare?

I had a similar counding problem on my last surf after I put on the spare wheel. It drove perfectly until I went to use the 4WD, which wouldn't engage properly. To get back into 2WD I had to turn the steering hard to one direction.

The problem was tyre sizes; the 4 tyres have to be the same size, otherwise the system has a fit and starts to eat itself. My tyres were 225/70/R16, but my spare was 265/65/R16, which made the diameter and width different. This was the way it was when I bought it, and I hadn't checked the spare size.

It happens with most 4WD and all wheel drive systems.
