Old jerry cans

I have a couple of old jerry cans in the garage but the red painted lining seems to be flaking off from the inside. Are these cans just fit for scrap or can they be flushed out and used?

The army surplus flexi spouts for jerry cans have a mesh filter on the spout so you could use them. I wouldnt hsve thought you can flush them and stop more flaking occuring though. I'm always a bit loathe to have any chance of crap in the fuel system so I tend to avoid using mine.

Sounds like they're scrap then, do more modern cans have a different coating inside or is it something that will always happen with age?

funnel with a fine gauze inside would cure the issue but if in doubt cut one side off it and use it as an oil catch can for doing oil changes etc.

Looks like good stuff but costly, i could probably get a couple of new cans for not much more
I didn't realise until today that a lot of the new 20l can are plastic, i think i may just get one to see what they're like.
