Any of you old fogies on here remember Telstar,Telstar 1 was launched on the 10th July 1962.So on Tuesday it will be 50 years old,I wonder if it is still up there ?. It transmitted through space telephone calls, fax messages, television pictures and the first live transatlantic television picture. What I did not know was that Telstar 2 was launched 7th May 1963.
Telstar satellites continued to be launched as late as 2005.
Telstar,by the TORNADOES was the first record( a 45 rpm single) I bought to play on my two tone leatherette covered Dansette record player.I think it was seven shillings and eleven pence,I was 10 at the time.

So Telstar 2 was launched before Telstar 1?
Telstar is also the title of a great film about Joe Meek, the writer and producer of the record, incidently.

Thats the one, wasn't "sputnik" the first satalite to orbit the earth? pee'd off the yanks no end that they were beaten in the space race, although there were many russian space shots that ended in disaster but we never knew about them at the time.
