  • Our super duper Australian vehicle

Ford Falcon, 1991 EB "wagon" "S" 3.9 straight 6 multipoint fuel injection.

When we first got it it was a little on the slow side but it's not bad for a cruiser. Owning a vehicle is much much easier over here. Providing you pay for "rego" (basically a MOT type certificate that you never have to get officially inspected unless it lapses) you can drive on the roads. No insurance is necessary because the rego includes the basic cover.

We found that the vehicle needed some TLC and we noted to complete a service at some point. I noticed that the throttle cable seemed too long by about 10 or 20mm. So I managed to make something up to take up the slack. Shortly after gaining quite a noticeable amount of power we lost it all and more. We crudely timed a 0-60mph time and found we run out of road after almost a minute before reaching 60mph. So, was pretty slow. The reason was the throttle cable had stretched even more. We also needed HT leads as they broke down at 3000rpm. So leads and plugs were changed so we could go over 3000rpm as well as the throttle cable.

Around the same time, the vehicle began over fueling. To the point that we now look exactly like Del and rodney (I'm Rodney). It used to be really good on fuel but now it drinks. I havent been able to work out what MPG we are getting because the odometer is broke. It doesn't backfire yet as it has a catalyst but hope to have it fixed well before then. It actually seems to be running better recently - i.e. it doesnt smoke any more but economy is still pretty crap.

The exhaust back box fell off too ages ago.

Engine RPM should be 600-ish at tickover. Actual RPM is more like 200 and sometimes doesn't register.

Just thought I'd share our comical experiences.
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

Sound like you've got perfect motor tony, its quicker than a 2.4 surf anyway.

From the sound of your vehicle you could be forgiven for expecting a Surf for a present!!!

Last owned a car this crap when I was 18. Strange thing though that this Falcon starts first time every time. It always goes - just badly

Could it be an Australian version of a surf (minus the pleasure of owning one)

I like Australia, but I don't have a mullet or listen to 80s music that much!

I know the general consensus of the forum is that I talk utter sh*te 99.9% of the time. I really don't. I gave my Surf to my mum and between her and my friendly mechanic the regular oil changes are done still. Although she drives it less than I did. I'll collect the Surf when I return in September. I've been offered sponsorship for a four year maximum (which usually goes on to permanent residency) but I do not wish to stay in Western Australia. I think I set high expectations that the trip has no where met. My girlfriend is working in New York just now, we're meeting in LA next weekend.

Earlier this week I went to a gold mine out in a place called Southern Cross as part of a project I am working on. I didn't wish to fly this time as the airport there is just a dirt strip and they close it when it rains (therefore not being able to leave!). The living arrangements and food is all cared for by the owner / company of the gold mine. They put me in the "executive suite" which is really a portacabin with double bed, Sky TV (with movie channels) an air conditioner / heater and en suite shower / toilet room. Breakfast is from 04:30 til 07:30, and the sun rise at breakfast time is amazing. You cannot hear a sound other than the faint mining equipment in the distance which is 24x7.
For this trip I had a Ford Falcon XR6 (I wanted a Holden but they didn't have any). Not sure what engine size or power but was quite decent and relatively powerful 6 speed auto. Was fun with traction controll turned off.

Last night I was casually sitting on the sofa with the girl we live with having a glass of vino watching TV as you do. Out the corner of my eye I saw what I thought was a fly on the cushion. When I looked it was a red back spider. We worked out that when I got off the buss and walked across the grassy bit to the house, the thing I felt must not have been a fly like I thought but this thing. It doesn't kill but would have made me very ill (apparently).

                            Generic red back spider photo:

I've included the rental Falcon, picture of our home, me doing a handstand (as you do), and some generic photos of the trip this week (an old 1940s truck?)

Hope I don't dissapoint? I'll get some of our crappy Falcon soon. It's really crap, we need to sort out the over fueling issue. However it's really my friends car as I train it to work and back and he uses it as a daily driver.
