I heard something like that a while back, but to be honest, I cant see how it makes much difference.

It's a bit like someone holding your head under water til you drown with rough bare hands against doing the same thing wearing a soft fur glove.

I never fished for the sake of it though, only ever fished with the aim of keeping / eating my catch.

barbless hooks are for rivers mainly that use 'catch and release' policies. Some places will only allow single barbless hooks.
