  • Starting issues Again.

Got up at four this morning as I wanted a nice early start on cutting my hedges. I jumped into the Surf to move it and all I got was a rapid clicking and the dash lights flashing and at one stage the rev counter needle I'm sure shot up to about half way. The starter was trying to turn the motor over.As the Truck was parked up for a day or so and most of this time one or more doors were open I just assumed Batterys had died. So off into workshop to get my boats charged lesuire battery and still the same. I did notice the nearside positive terminal was a tad loose and I could move it by hand so I will tighten that and retry.
I fitted a new starter on the 13/06/11 and as its not showing the same old signs I had before I am fairly sure its OK. I will go out for an hour so and check a few more things.
    Any help gratefully received......Webbo.

Sounds like flat batteries or a poor connection somewhere.
    Still on a mission.

What capacity is the leisure battery ?
If memory serves me I think you will need something like 650 CCA to start.
Check your battery voltage with a meter first then if it is low stick a battery charger on for a couple of hours.

For the long term think about changing the interior lamps to led I left my boot light on all weekend once and it was only the eerie glow from the inside that made me have a second look, they draw such a small amount of current that you hardly notice them.

Thanks Guys, I have checked all the conections I can find from the starter to the batterys. The lesuire battery is 110ah and I am certain it is charged as the indicator on it is in the green. The Trucks on charge at the moe so I will go back to it in a few hours. Ta.

Been on charge since 0500 and its just started I know they need tip top batteries to start them. Hoping thats all it was, I will leave it on trickle charge all day. Thanks again.

All seems OK now, all I can put it down to is the interior light drained the Batterys.

Good!!! i'm sure my alternators not putting out enough, according to the aftermarket gauge its at 11-12v when running with not much else running, thats why i used to like ampmeters, you could see the charge/discharge,
voltmeters are ok but not as exact in my view, ampmeters are prone to overload and catch fire(as one of mine did)
Too young to die and too old to give a toss

Thats not quite enough is it Ian ? Have you tried with a more accurate DVM ?

No mate, dont have one and cant think who has unless i take it to a "specialist" and ya know what that means, it's not too big a prob long as i leave the engine running when useing the step/winch, and i stick it on charge now and then if i aint used it for a few days, intend getting one of those solar trickle chargers when i can.

I may have an old Fluke dvm Ian. Some of the functions dont work, Bit like me ! I am sure it reads voltage OK if I can find it I will post it on Mate.

You should be able to pick up a Digital Volt Meter for very little money - well worth having and at 11-12v it sounds like there is a conection issue from the alternator, or the alternator itself. Could just be the regulator on the back of the alternator too..

                          Have a look at :

Just gotta finish doing the next mod...

Thanks for those links Andy, ok then first step is to check the connections, i think i'll invest in a voltmeter,, at least then i'll know whats happening, all i'm going off at the mo is the reading on the aftermarket volt gauge which defenatly seems on the low side to me, at least i dumped the air con so theres plenty of room
