  • Anyone painted plastic??

Not Toyota, but I bought for our Voyager a full navy blue leather interior, and fitted it last weekend.
The problem I'm left with is the doner was auto, mine is manual.the auto has a dash mounted gearchange and no center consul,so I've had to keep the old one which is beige.Obviously beigh and navy blue don't look to hot next to each other,so what I'm after knowing is if anyone has painted plastic trim parts, what did you use and how did it turn out???

    Thanks

Make sure you use a good cleaner to prep the surface as interior parts usually end up with interior dress up sprays used on them - these contain silicone and similar chemicals that if not stripped off properley will mean that your new paint will soon start to peel off.

Then get yourself some plastic primer which will bond itself to the surface and then you can paint over the top with whatever colour you wish - there are lots of different paints about if you can help it I wouldnt use a gloss or if you do in order to get the right colour give it a top cost of satin lacquer to give a decent finish.

Have a look about there may be some interior trim paints about on the net. Just take your time and make sure you prep it properley. use light coats as well depending on what texture there is on the surface as too heavy a coat will fill the texture and leave you with an uneven finish.

I'm with Ian on this! Every time this has been tried it ends up dull silver which looks nothing like it is on the lid.

like bayside said, just make sure you clean the trim properly, if poss get some "panel wipe" from a auto paint dealer, first a good wash in hot soapy water, dry andf then the wipe, plastic primer and virtually owt will stick on there ok, done much of my trim with satin black years ago and no peeling at all, (many scratches but no peeling)

                Thanks for the responses felllas,

So basically make sure the plastic is clean and free from "dash flash" and the like, plastic primer and top coat!
I think i'll probably go for a satin black,on the basis that if you you can't match it perfectly, contrast it!!

                Cheers
