I was told many years ago, that if you do nothing else to your vehicle in the way of servicing, at least change the oil regularly. Im guessing this chap or chapess never heard that one. Id also suspect that possibly some cheapo mineral oil has been thrown in there at some point. I can,t see a good semi synth ending up looking like that in a hurry.
