  • Another quick question (sorry)

i have to get some extension cable for the winch and not sure how it's measured, the cable on the winch is 10mm o/s (i put a caliper on it and measured the gap, looking at welding cable and cant see how they measure it, so what size do i need to look for? also what size connectors to go with it?
    like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-Copper-...item3a71fc6582

Cable these days is meansure in mm2. I'd find out the max Amps draw of winch, then look it up online as see what size cable they recommend.

In english terms its normally 8 or 9 gauge, but also know people upgrade it to thicker, (smaller numbers). but I don't know what it is in metric.

Try looking for arc welding cables.

Cheer's Tony, the battery cable details in the winch listing states "2 gauge"
the one i linked there (looking at another listing from another seller) gives the outside dia of 9.2mm which aint far off my (not exactly ultra accurate measuring) of 10mm, i think the cable in the listing will do ok, it's the bl00dy terminals, dont want to order 10 and find the copper cable wont fit in the hole
btw, just noticed on that overload thingy its marked 50A so i assume thats 3 X 50A fuses on that buss bar, 150 amps!!

16mm sq cable has a copper diameter of just smaller than your average pencil if that helps, we use mm here in ireland... but in saying that i run the amps in the truck on a 4AWG cable... pig to get into the terminals....

cheer's Bob, that i can understand, sounds about the same as the cable on the winch, time you add the plastic coating it'll prob bring it up to about 10mm, i have emailed the seller and asked a couple of questions and if he sells the terminals to suit, thanks mate

From memory 16mm is good for 60A. I think welding cable is rated at more than that. Most difficult thing is getting the lugs on the ends, really you need special crimpers for it. Local electrical wholesalers tend to hire these out but no idea how much. You can use mine for free but I might be a bit far to travel.

have you bought the cable off ebay yet??? give me the measurements you need, i have a crimper that does up to 240mm so if i can get it for the same price as you i can get them made to length and crimped for you...

Thanks Bob/Ambobeer, haven't ordered anything yet, i did get a quick reply from the seller enquiring about the load rating in amps of the winch which from what i can see in the description is 60-400A, the buss bar has three 50A fuses (150A?) can only see the 50A mark on one as they are close together so i'm just assumeing,
haven'y properly measured up but at a guess i need to extend three cables (2 X red and 1 X black about 1.2-3 mt, was just gonna bolt to the existing short ones as i dont really want to mess about inside the solinoid box, the box is fitted where the air filter was (2.4) and the existing tails reach alongside the N/S battery, i think the winch connectors are 10mm,
so i was gonna order 4 mt of red and 1mt black plus the terminals,
anyway Bob, if you can supply two 2.2 mt red and one 2.2 mt black with ends on that would be great, let me know cost and post etc, dont worry tho if you cant, just let me know either way, and there's no rush as i have loads of other stuff to get on with, thanks again.

Thanks bob, i got the lenght's wrong i think
it's 2 lenghts of red at 1.2mt each and 1 lenght of black at 1.2 mt, really should engage the brain before typeing

The guy on ebay got back to say the cable he sells may not be heavy enough at 110A, and that's the highest rated cable he sell's, at least he's honest, so i guess i need cable with a 150A minimum,
