Front Springs

Just fitting some new front springs onto some new shocks, I've about 4mm of the strut sticking proud of the spring now so fair way left to go but the compressors are bent to bits. Is this normal?

Also, should there be a flat at both ends of the spring? The strut seems to sit at an angle inside the spring.

######## to it, took it to a local garage to get springs installed on shocks, got way too scary doing it at home!!
