  • Truck off the road- Not in the off road kind :(

Truck went in to have the seals done in the Diesel Injector Pump. Mechanic rung me this evening, Got to take pump to be pressure tested in the morning before he attempts to change seals. If it fails, its goodbye truck.......Cant afford to spend any more on it.

Why do garage people make such a drama about it?

Just get a good used pump, shouldn't cost more that £100 or so.

If he's just changing the seals if they are leaking why even do that, it runs now dosn't it?

Because that's how they make lots of money.

Smurf, they're telling you a load of horseshit. Seal kit is £14 from Roughtrax. Why pressure test something that's leaking? It will leak. Where from? The seals.

And yes, you can buy a second hand pump for about a hundred quid. You can probably sell yours with the seals needing replacing for half of that...

Its a pump I bought from here as mine was giving up. Had it fitted but it was leaking. Booked it into garage to get seals changed and he thinks it could be cream crackered as it was soaked in diesel. But I have been using it even with the leak and it run ok, just really fed up now.

Did the same guy that fitted it tell you that it's now leaking and might need replacing?

Same mechanic, he said he will do all the work for me but wants it pressure tested first as when he fitted it for me, he (and I) thought the pump was ok. But there has been a steady drip of diesel since fitted and cost of diesel every drop counts. I've bought a seal kit from roughtrax, he is willing to do it if the pressure test is ok?

ok im getting a bit confused here
so your "mechanic" is going to take your leaking fuel pump to be pressure tested , in order to come back and say " yes your pump is leaking, thats £50 please for the pleasure" in which case your back to the stage your at now of knowing you have a leaking pump.
and correct me if im wrong but a leaking fuel pump will leak diesel from its leaking seals which will make the pump be covered in diesel so this makes it knackered (which you knew the seals where knackered anyway hence why you took it there to get the leaking seals replaced)

im not being sarcastic but i think hes bending you over and tearing you a new one

he hasnt offered to buy your "knackered" truck off you cheap yet has he

If it is leaking when the engine is running then it is probably just the top seal.

I 'fixed' mine a while back using some gasket in a tube .

It was a bit fiddly but not impossible.

I am with the above sounds like the mechanic is probably rubbing his hands and thinking 'tidee'

Not knowing your level of mechanical ability but have you actually had a look at the leak your self?
I am sure I have seen pictures of a top seal repair being done if not on here then on the Aussie site.

Mechanic has told he doesnt want to touch the seals until he know which ones are leaking. Pump has gone into Diesel injector place this morning along with the seals for them to repair if (If worth doing) Mechanic will then replace pump for me. Im pretty sure to get a big bill, but hubby does not want to risk buying another lemon and paying to have it fitted.

Sounds like you're stuck, it's frustrating how easy it could be.

I generally use a can of brake cleaner to clean the pump and its surrounds then just run the truck till you spot the fuel running out. There is only one o-ring you can't replace with the pump in the car, the rest you don't even need to remove the pump for.

The rear seal around the distributive head is a more of a bugger, and needs more care to get off, but its not often that one anyway.

Hubby has just corrected me, he says mechanic want electro diesel specialist to replace rear seal on pump as its visably leaking and then pressure test the pump as front seal also very wet to make sure it is ok before he refits it

Sorry bit late on this one but just had the same probably myself... have a search under my posts for pump problems for the thread and here is the link to the Australia site for the how to do it... I'm rubbish with a spanner but the 2 top seals were about 4 pounds and about 30 min under the bonnet to fix..... ###### garages...

would speak to diesel bob (if of course you don't want to get your hands dirty as soon as it needs to come off the block its a lot more involved)

                          http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/?gclid=CJ...FYImtAod-npwIw

he did mine think it was around the £100 mark diesel was pouring out and not a problem since other than O ring on top (about 12months later) did that myself in about 30mins

Diesel bob does great work on injectors and pumps, but he's got the hump with Surfs in general after a few bad experiances with ones with heads gone while they had them and people saying its his fault.

There was note on his website last year saying they won't work on them anymore.

He's still the man for mail order parts though.
