For what it's worth, if you're looking for economy, some of the older pugs are very tolerant of high concentrations of veg oil. If memory serves its the 405s that are favoured but I could be wrong.

If its of interest to you have a gander at the vegetableoildiesel forum. I think some over there discuss the mod you mention too.

As long as it was a Bosch pump, The lucas pump won't tolerate veg oil but it will be ok with bio diesel, I've had a few 1.9 XUD engined cars apart from head gaskets failing at around 95,000mls The engine has been well proven, The HDI does have a tendency to put number two conrod through the engine casing if you drive it hard normal use it should be fine, The HDI is also not too tolerant of vegoil either from what i've been led to believe.

I've thought of that myself and if I see a decent one at a good price I'd probably go for it.

Aye i had a citroen Xantia (before laughing starts it cost me £27.50 off Ebay) i ran that on SVO and it was fine until the the pump decided to leak! but a couple of hours removing the pump and replacing the seals it was good again. The normally aspirated lump in the pugs run the Lucas pump, just as a "rule of thumb" upto 1999 pugs run XUD after "99" they start with the HDI IIRC

rustino do you think perhaps your taking this a bit to the nth degree? ive had 3 pugs with no problems ive had a 106 and 405's with no repairs at all..all did mega miles and went like stink off a blanket, particularly the 106 1700 td

after all your not buying a roller or bently i would take a chance on a pug any day at the right money

that is unless your wanting a sport or eco model

The thing is that the cars I'm looking at (hopefully less than £300) tend to have something wrong with them & given that this is a common fault and a probable solution (assuming there isn't an oxygen sensor knackered or something) I was just trying to find out if anyone had done this sort of thing before.

I need to get a car for £27.50! Alas, I think those days are long gone given the effect that the last governments scrappage scheme had (pushed the price of old second hand cars & spares through the roof).
