Would an inverter cope with that? i know it'd only be in used in short few second bursts, i'd really like a good full size winch but i'm getting to the stage where i'm wondering if i'm just throwing good money after bad,
run the compressor up yesterday and that aint pumping!! another friggin headache,

Just need to find out the current draw from the winch Ian. The only thing is the bigger the inverter the more Dough.

That second one is the one i have already, it just seemed to struggle a bit lifting me on the step (dont say it!!) however i tried the missis on it for the first time today and it sounded a bit better
so the idea works ok, now the problem is "ridgitity" the step isn't steady as it can sway a bit from side to side and as it's held up by a central cable (from the winch) on a pulley it tilts up and down at each side, just been down to the metal guy in havant and got some more angle and bar so for the third time i'm gonna remake the lifting arms and pivot points, should make the thing a bit more stable and she wont then cr@p herself on it

as for my enquiry about a winch i had this brainwave!! i thought if i got a full size winch and mounted it in the normal place on the front i would then have a winch i could rely on and trust as opposed to the chinese thing, i would also have the benifiet of a emergancy winch should i ever need it, i had a look and i could run the cable down and under the front on a pully and to the step via more pulleys, should i ever need to use the winch for other purposes i can unhook the cable from the step cable and use it as normal,
and i got the winch i always wanted!!! anyway the cheapo one will do for now but i'll keep an eye out for a biggun,
acually theres one on ebay but as bl00dy useual it's up north and collection only, thanks for the links tho
