Especially if she slips into deeper water, what the hell were they thinking steering her in so close to shore, unbelievable stupidity

Isn't that standard practice with a sinking, but still movable Ship?

Same as Herald of Free Enterprise Si, as long as she doesn't slip into deep water they intend to multi-leg haul and lift her upright ( after draining the tanks of oil etc) * re ballast the keel tanks after temp bulk head patching etc, they are worried that the sea may hinder progress because storms forecast

Always amazed me whenever there was a problem at Sea there was always a Schlumberge or Schmidttak tug just around the corner waiting to throw a line, oh and claim salvage rights...

i ment when she hit in the first place!! he/they did do the right thing in makeing for shore to beach her, or try to, bringing all passengers and crew up on deck should have taken place much earlier, not after an hour or so, if were to believe reports, it looks like the captain went into shock and was totally useless, second office should have taken over when he realised the captain was incapable of functioning properly, always easier in hindsight i know but ffs, he just got complacent as they [passed on that route often,
end of the day the buck stops with the captain and he was apparantly on the bridge at the time and in full command,
what is unforgivable is him leaveing the ship and leaveing passengers and crew to their fate, i aint any sort of hero but i couldn't live with myself if i did that, dont believe in going down with it but i would stay as long as i could, at least till i'd helped get as many as possible off or i got washed off the deck when she went under,

Its pretty obvious something went wrong, and there is no question that the Master ( captain) has to take the bulk of the blame, but Im a bit wary about hanging someone based on whats in the press. Right now they will be making up most of their reports, based around a few little facts.
As the Master he will have signed a flag state log book stating he was in full charge of the ship and its contents, and he should definitely have remained on board and taken control of the emergency. Whatever the truth turns out to be his life as a Master mariner is over and currently it appears deservedly so. Whether he was on the bridge at the time or not, hes still the vessels Master and the only way hes relieved of fault for the grounding is if someone deliberately disobeyed an instruction or if some other multiple failures took place. Even if the grounding is not his fault, his behaviour after it will come under plenty scrutiny, and its in this areawhere it appears he fell seriously short of expectations. Time and evidence will tell. Right now I will continue to take what I read in the press with a wee pinch of salt

How old are you? 10 (ish) it was a car ferry that jibbed out with the loading doors open and promptly flooded and rolled over
