    Hello everybody!
First, I'd like to introduce myself! I'm a proud owner of a 97 4Runner 4WD in the US!! A lot of us (3rd gen 4runner owners) are very envious of your Rear Mounted Tire Carriers on your 96+Surfs. My question is...was that an option, or was it standard equipment? Also, does anybody know how it's mounted? I'd personally like to add one to my 4runner ASAP, if possible.

EDIT: It seems that the mod has been done..But I haven't seen how.
    Thanks in advance!

      Neil.

Not sure on the 3rd Gens how it is mounted, however it was an option on SSR-X and standard on SSR-G models. If it is mounted like the second gens, it has two hinges mounted on the offside corner (above and below the rear light cluster) and then a lock mechanism and guide / strengthening plate mounted on the tailgate. This is fitted where the license plate and reversing lamps are (the whole license plate, mounting and lamps is unclipped from inside the tailgate).

You need to weld in some strengthening plates behind where the hinges are mounted and also behind the lock mechanism as the whole assembly is pretty heavy and puts a lot of strain on the hinges when opened.

You then need to fabricate a mounting for the license plate and some license plate lamps. You will also need to use the rear lamp clusters that include the reversing lamp or fit a reversing lamp (or two) under the rear bumper.

Hope that this helps. You can probably get the parts from your local Yota dealer if he is prepared to import - I am sure we could come up with the part numbers for you.

      Cheers

Looking at your pics of your 3rd gen, there is a difference in the spare carriers between 2nd & 3rd, as my 2nd gen has a totally different catch mechanism on the door and a different shaped carrier as well.
