I'm going to uphrade the SD card for my DSLR (Canon EOS500D), but I have no idea which to buy. I'm thinking about 2 x 32GB or 2 x 64GB (depending on cost!), but I have no idea what constitutes a good card. Can any of you advise?

    Cheers!

        Trust me, I didn't lecture you ...

Which pair of 64GB cards would you recommend?

That's a typo, not a spelling error But thanks for pointing it out.

Go for any big name brand SD card. What is the data rate of your camera? I expect it is high-end and therefore would require a decent write speed of the card to successfully save the data quick enough. My HD camera requires a class 6 card although a decent class 4 is supposed to be good enough I wanted the assurance. I have used Kingston class 6.

Also stay away from the cheapy ebay Kingstons. They're suspected fakes and wont have the same data rate.

I've also read of a certain camera modification which allows very good HD video. In this instance the camera lens is able to fill the buffers / overutilise the bus of the camera itself! (Slightly off-topic)

There is also a class 10 card, but for example I considered the £35 I paid for my 16Gb expensive, so I'll expect your card to be in the hundreds.
              Oh Nana, what's my name?

I've been thinking about class 10 Kingstons or the likes, to make it reasonably future proof, but I found THIS which looks like excellent value but I don't recognise the brand.

My 500D does Full HD video too, but I've never tried it (I actually don't know how to do it!).

I would personally stay away from Transcend. This is why I said big name brand. Transcend makes RAM for PC's, however I originally bought a Transcend card and had lost quite a bit of scuba footage. I also partly blame the camera but the cameras manufacturer wholely blamed the poorly made card. I joined a forum where there were plenty of people having issues with cheap cards. When we all switched to the more expensive brand all of our problems vanished. There were others who said they had no problems with those cards in other cameras though. I wouldn't take the risk for loosing captures. You just can't reproduce certain things like that.

I've used a few Transcend cards for years with no problems although I don't have any over 16GB - which manufacturers cameras were giving problems with them ?

Personally I'd go for the Cl10 card as well but I'd go for multiple 32GBs as they're likely to work out cheaper.

                              PS
If you're set on the 64GB it's available a lot cheaper than the previous link:
