I thought the programme maker was pretty neutral and reported all sides of the argument fairly well.
The 'no 4x4/bikes on our green lanes' brigade came across as bigoted, small minded individuals stuck (as one commentator said) in the 1950s.
The park authority and county council officers seemed fair minded and generally supportive of open access to all. Unfortunately, some of the park authority elected board members were anti-motor vehicle which led to the 'trial' closure of the Chapel Gate path in order to protect the farmland bordering the path and an overall review of access.
There was footage of a green lane which had been maintained and a previously very damaged water crossing improved for all users. Coincidentally, there is a thread on a mountain bike forum which I dip into from time to time moaning about councils maintaining the surface of green lanes and taking away the challenge for MTB riders.
Just goes to show that you can't please everyone - or anyone in some cases!

I agree with Mark, the off roaders spokesman appeared to be from GLASS and they were a well spoken, informed, intelligent lot. The ramblers were upper middle class, predominantly over 55, smug, whiny, fat, had crooked teeth and moustaches (and that was just the women)!
Some of them cried when they couldn't get their own way and naturally they wanted everything in the Peak District parks closed to 4x4's and motorbikes.
The park people were mainly unbiased and said they would prefer to keep existing routes open to off roaders as the parks were meant to be used by everyone. However I fear the mounting pressure from hikers / ramblers may sway their decisions.'Tis better to sting than to be stung!

Best comment was (from an "aside" where the general public are interviewed in Park car parks) "yes we get chips from Bakewell and come up here to eat them... we also like chips from Buxton and have a nice view from there also..." "so it's chips and views for you then?" Cracking TV.
One thing I didn't know is that the "Kinder Scout Tresspass" in the good olde dayes resulted in the Peak National Park being formed and enabled the general public to go "WHERE THEY LIKE" on common ground /countryside.
It's this ancient rule that stops any lanes from being easily closed... as it would restrict access and be against what the KST stood for.
Now, the ironic bit.
All the KST's were on foot!
So, good on ya, ramblers, your "busy body, I will walk where I want to and you won't stop me" attitude means I can drive my Surf all over the Peak District...AND YOU MADE IT POSSIBLE!
Oh how I laughed."B.A." Baracus: "Talk to me, talk sense so I can talk back. Not all this jibberjabber like breaking the peace and all that."

If a horse is going down the lane, the walkers get out the way and stand to the side, but when the motox bike came down they just stood all over the lane and tried getting in front of it! it just seems like they willingly get in the way and dont stand aside just so they can complain.
There must be loads of routes and paths that are not open to motorvehicles, the green lane ones a far and few inbetween considering the size of the parks.
non-stop ''tranquil places''....''not for motorvehicles''.....''dangerou s''.....etc etc. seemed alot more towards the walkers and not much focusing on off roading. Even the copper seemed smug.
shall we organise a mass meet for the green lanes at the parks? My Surf eats knuckles for breakfast!

I watched it, and it wound me up something terrible. esp the meeting where the 'offroader' offered to cut back blackthorn, and the 'moaning old tw4t' said "You offroaders are nothing, why cant you get that into your head? youre' nothing"
I was steaming at the TV, all my offroading mates txtin back and forth going "What the hell??" etc etc...
I did however like the comment from the film maker "Offroaders are a formidable opponent"
Yes, to answer your q Wolf, i would like to go for a ride out to Chirpit!! Just say the word!!www.vidamusic.co.uk

Dunno why everyone cant just get on...
Years back, when I lived in North West Wales, I was mountain biking with a couple of locals somewhere well off the beaten track in the Rhinogs. We did it a lot and never saw a soul up there. One saturday we came towards a bloke on his own with a map and the long socks, ski poles etc.
He waved us down and then started laying into us for riding on a footpath. Funny thing was, he was shouting the odds in a broad brummie accent, having turned up for a walking holiday. My Welsh mate said very calmly to him 'my father owns this land, this is not a footpath, now get off my land before I kick your '******* arse off it'
Much fumbling of maps and mutterings he wandered off down the track. It *was* a footpath, and my mate didn't own the land, but how dare he moan about 3 bikers riding a track that was barely ever used except by us!
My point is, we were all ready to shout a cheery hello, maybe have a chat, and expect the same back. What would have been the issue? Some folk aren't happy unless they're whining about something.
This is the area I seem to recall - not exactly overrun is it?
