oh no point at all dealing with any one at TFL as their data base is based on what DVLA says a vehicle is classed as.they will always redirect you back to the DVLA

Thank you to those that sent me your car details.

I've had enough; I sent them this, and I'm gonna bell Watchdog on Thursday:

Dear Ms Jones and Mrs Cameron,

I have two more registration numbers for you:

Mxxxxxx - this is a 2nd generation 3.0l Surf (the same as mine) that you currently have registered as an estate.
M761 XTM - this was the Surf that I owned before my current one. This is also a 2nd generation 3.0l Surf, and was also registered as an estate.

For your further information, the Hilux pick-up trucks have the following prefixes to their VIN, dependant on their engine size and year of manufacture: YN65, LN65, YN106, LN105, LN165, KDN165, KUN25, KUN26, LN106 or LN107 whereas the Hilux Surfs' VIN prefixes are: LN130, KZN130 or KZN185. I would suggest that you retain this information for future use as I am well aware that I am not the only Surf driver whose life you are making into a living hell, though why you don't already have this information to hand is quite beyond me and simply beggars belief.

Had you bothered to do any research at all, you would have found out for yourselves that a Toyota vehicle with a VIN that starts with KZN130 is a 3.0l diesel Hilux Surf and not a Hilux, or in other words a KZN130 is an estate bodied 4x4 SUV and not a pick-up bodied LUV.

Quite frankly, I am thoroughly disgusted at the amount of investigation I have had to do on your behalf. On top of what I have already sent you, all of the information and proof that you require is freely available on the Internet and this case has been dragged out and delayed by what would appear to be nothing more than laziness, slapdash working procedures and a sheer lack of common sense. If this isn't the case, please advise me what, exactly, has been taking so long and causing you so much difficulty.

As you have now had my logbook and its initial accompanying letter since 8th September, be advised that if my correctly amended V5C is not returned to me by 5pm on Tuesday, 25th October 2011, I shall be raising an official complaint with Carole Evans and Simon Tse over your handling of this case.

          Sincerely,

wow, after reading all this im so glad mine is registered as an estate, i feel for you, they really are being silly and unhelpful for no real reason. wish i could help but watchdog would probably be interested as i can't imagine its only surf owners that are having this problem.
good luck and keep us updated

i am having the same problems i tried just sending v5 that didnt work so i took pics of my surf and a letter explaining and that didnt work so i sent more pics and a more detailed letter and you guessed it that didnt work so i went to the local dvla tax office and showed the lady there my logbook, wiki definition of a light utility vehicle with pics and wiki def of an estate car plus 2 pages of surfs showing number plate and written above that they are lez compliant she took paperwork away and showed her superviser and came back saying they both agree that it is an estate car not a light utility vehicle, brilliant so i asked if i could have that on a dvla headed letter so i can put it all in an envelope and send it back to the dvla for the 4th time and hopefully get my v5 changed and she said did i have pics of my surf which i didnt as i had the car parked downstairs but they need pics so i have to go back with pics to get the letter which i will do and let you know how i get on

Just got my letter back from TFL LEZ saying my surf is now

                            "not subject to LEZ charge"

I sent all the required paperwork to the DVLA changing my car to an estate they sent back the reply we cant unless you get proof from Toyota head office
                            etc.......yawn yawn

I contacted TFL LEZ and "opened a case" to review my vehicle which they did and were very polite and helpful i gave them all my details
                            - 4 weeks later rang them again explaining that my MOT TAX and insurance is due and want to know an outcome asap incase i need to sell the vehicle they said my case is being looked at as we speak - then hey presto a letter arrives telling me i'm in the clear

It is definately worth talking to them direct

It seems all you can do is keep trying until one of the few people at DVLA pick up your letter and deal with it accordingly. It appears there are a few differences of opinions at The DVLA. When you have it dealt with successfully buy a lottery ticket that same day.
                              Oh Nana, what's my name?

                                They really are F**KING STUPID!!!

So, in reply to my rant, I got this:

I rang them, of course. I demanded that they explain how, if all the other Surf's whose details I sent them are registered as estates, why won't they correct mine accordingly. They said "we can't discuss other vehicles."

When I enquired as to why, then, they had made me provide them with details of Surfs registered as estates they told me "we can't discuss other vehicles."

I was advised that if I had a complaint, I should write to their CEO! Well, I haven't bothered yet. This time I sent the V5 back, without an accompanying letter, with the word estate in the corrections section.

If questioned, I will quote the V5C back at them -

Registered Keeper: (to sign when notifying of any change). I declare that the new details I have given are true to the best of my knowledge.

Since I know the car to be an estate, it would be an offence for me to drive around in it knowing that the V5C is incorrect...
