          No its not just...

its a great big fecking chasm in your head.

And to be fair its probably been "breaking" for a long time... one of them things with our trucks.
My new head is going okay, and done a fair few miles on it. The old one did about 200k km...

The guy that rebuilt my gearbox suggested that the wear was more like he'd expect to see in a 150k+ miles car. The bloke who rebuilt my injectors said "135k kilometres? Are you sure?"

Kind of makes me think my truck was clocked in Japan (I have the UK history).

Thats a nice hi-res picture you have there! And nice work on the crack. I think you win the "who has the biggest crack" competition, if that's still running.

All I could think as to why that happened is may be a hot spot? Lack of coolant flow or any coolant around that area? Seems strange it goes across two different pieces of the head, from the main cast to the pre combustion chamber.

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow...but soon. Like i said, 200 k km on mine when it went. If i get the same kilometerage before it goes again, i'll be more than happy.

It isn't just Surfs - a chap (that I'm actually vaguely related to) I know who works at a garage dealing with these things has seen quite a few other Japanese import 4x4s with similar problems and reckons there must be something that is either commonly done with/to these trucks in Japan or something about the import process that must affect them somehow.

I honestly haven't a clue if he's onto something there or not but...

Nope. I'm not re-fitting the EGR gubbins though.

OK, I was asking because I keep meaning to do it, but I haven't because I was under the impression that it increases head temps.

I you do do it, I'd take the inlet manifold off and clean it out. Mine was filthy. A good 1/4 inch of carbon built up around 3 and 4 inlet ports (crack was cylinder 2).

I still think the head issue is a water quality thing. I'd like to know if there's a relationship between the heads cracking and water quality.

I can probably supply 20l drums of Malvern Spring water for cost of transport.

Interesting question, a generator engineer friend of mine has mentioned cavitation causing some failures in some of his engines, but I can't remember if it was cylinder heads or cylinder bores. He said on his older engines he liked to run demin water/glycol only, and with more glycol than reqd.ie if it needed 50/50 he would run 30 demin water 70 glycol.
