Can anyone offer advice please. Just got a used fuel pump to replace to my very leaky one on the surf. Now as I am totaly useless at anything technical I took the old girl upto the local garage and asked them to change the pumps over and fit new timing belt whilst all stripped down. Just spoke to the guy at the garage and he said that having put it all back together is started up but would not rev up and that the engine management light had come on. He says either a duff pump ( cant be, I bought it off a member on here ) or it needs to be re- calibrated to my vehicle . Im sure that I saw a thread on here a while back with a similar story. Can any one tell me what to get the garage to check in the morning. Im sure that they have just missed something.

Hi Vince. Could be, the guy at the garage said he had lined all the marks up, but I'm looking for simple and not deep intake of breath answers. Could it be as simple as that ? What would he have to do, just take the belt off and spin the cam and realign the marks?

        Yes.
It's been done on here before as the camshaft timing mark is at the '6 o'clock' position instead of the usual '12 o'clock' position if I remember correctly, it's been a few years now since I've fiddled with a 2.4 engine, they go in the bin these days after the V8 is installed.

Fingers crossed then. I'll give the guy at the garage the good news in the morning and hope that it will be sorted. Guy a few doors away from me has a Lexus sitting in his yard doing nothing.Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

As Vince says they probably got the timing wrong. May not be the cam or crank that's out, but could be just pump timing. Do a diagnostic check and see what code you get.

Well Just been back up to the garage. truck sat there in bits. Timing has been checked and re checked but still wont rev past 2000rpm. Guy at the garage said he has asked around with other garages and the only thing that keeps coming back is that the advance solonoid in the pump is faulty. To be honest that dont mean a lot to me exept the it looks as though the pump is knackered. Anyone got words of wisdom for me, or do I just weigh her in now.

Any one? Had word from the guy I got the pump off, said it came off a runner and cant understand the problem. TBH I belive him and have no reason to doubt his word. The guy at the garage has been on this site and looked at theads to try and sort an answer. Short of putting the old pump back on, which is pi$$ing diesel out of the seals, till I can find another pump I'm lost for an answer. I am on a weeks holiday from work this week but due back on monday, but to be honest wont be able to get there if I cant sort the truck out and then I have to ask myself 'how much should I throw at the car anyway'. Any advice would be more than welcome at the moment, even a bit of wit may lift the mood in the spoggle household at the moment. Had the Surf for over 7 years now and have become quite attached, getting rid would be like having a much loved dog put down

Million to one chance of this, but it did happen to me after I changed the head on my 2.4. And I can only think of it happening in your case if the when replacing the injector pipes. It's quite hard to see unless you climb onto the engine. At the back of the throttle housing (where the throttle and kickdown cables attach) there is a curved slider. The injector pipe was stuck against it making the engine tickover fast but unable to increase revs, and engine check light was on. Slackened the injector pipe (2nd one in from the bulkhead) prized it away from the accelarator body and re-tightend. tickover, revs and engine light all sorted.
Sorry for some of the untechnical terms and good luck.
                    All the best

God, how many times does a working truck go into a garage and then suddenly not work. It always seems to be a mystery technical problem, never their fault!

I'd get them to put the old pump back on, to prove they've not fawked anything up, then they can tell you the new pump is wrong.

                      Apart from the timing suggestions,
Have they pulled the codes to see what the fault is?
Have they left the TPS off or loose?
Is it idling 'normally' or roughly?

Any EFI 2.4 pump will work, it dosn't need adjusting.

Thanks Guy's for the words of wisdom and support. will go back to the garage tomorow and have another chat with them, but to be honest it will all depend on the cost. Just cant afford to throw much more at the old girl if it aint gonna sort the problem. May have to bite the bullet and say goodbye to her. Woold love to have another Surf but a look on the web hasnt brought many to light in my part of the world that I could afford and not too keen on traveling all over the U.K on what could be a wild goose chase. Love the surf even if the fuel costs have driven be to dispare. Having evil thoughts about turning to the dark side and looking for a, dare I even say the words, A land rover!!!!. My back is now knackered and getting into a normal saloon car is quite painfull so I have found the Surf a comfortable way of getting me and mine from A to B as well as dragging the old caravan away for the odd weekend, not to mention the odd expedition on green lanes. Hell my head hurts at the thoughtr of not having a Surf sat out side ready to go wherever, But if she has to go, well I'le bring her home and pull anything that worth having of her before she gets sent to China or wherever to be turned into whatever. Those of you who know me may have noticed that I have had a tot or two and am being very sentimental. Oh yeah and Tony, I wish you were nearer to where I live mate.

                        Cheers Spoggle (hick!)

Happens a lot down here. One a few months back had a fortune spent on it by the owner. Only after repeated demands for the mechanic to check the timing did they discover they had got it wrong.

As Tony says all the Surf 2.4 EFI pumps will work. Have you got a part number for the original and replacement pump?

Do the code check and post the results.
