Non makes more sense in Latin, but given that neither illegitimi nor carborundum have any meaning (or at least not that intended) in Latin, it probably isn't worth getting too excited about...

My little Nissan kubistar has symbol showing right and filler on left... found out the first time I went to fill up.

The exhaust/fuel filler thing makes sense. Who wants to accidentally spill fuel onto a hot exhaust?

I had a bit of a brown trouser moment on a bike once when the carbs started overflowing and the overflow pipe had somehow found it's way onto the exhaust. I initially thought "whats that noise?" as it boiled off the hot exhaust. As soon as I realised what it was (the smell was unmistakeable!) I whipped my gloves off and re-routed the overflow pipe toute suite!

Isn't the filler on the left hand side (or nearside!) of a third gen surf, where the picture on the dash has the handle on the right? It is on mine!

The filler and the exhaust are opposite each other, though.

                    Does it really matter?

My 3rd gens have little pictures of four green wheels on the dash but when I press the button for 4WD my tyres stay black!

Yes. I proved Andy wrong by only taking notice of my fuel gauge when going for petrol this lunchtime. I had to go past the pump and reverse in to the next bay!!

                      Thanks Andy, for your misinformation!

Vauxhall's current naming convention says that all model names end with an a. Been that way since the Cavalier went out of production.

                            (Monaro isn't a Vauxhall, it's a Holden)

I checked all the motors I have laying around here, 2nd and 3rd Gen Surfs, Ford Transit Connect, Pajaro, the Westfield kit car, and a Iveco Cargo horse lorry, next doors Golf and Merc. All obayed Andys rules apart from a Pajaro which has the fuel gauge symbol the wrong way round.

                                Pretty good.
