  • Hi from Hants,UK

I am new here guys and thinking of getting a surf so I thought I should come on here to see what the score was and make some friends

I want a daily driver and also something for some light laning!

How good are the surfs off road and how reliable are they?

    Many thanks

    Fett

    Hi.

A Surf with decent A/T tyres will do any greenlaning you want to do. Don't go alone and you'll always have a way out if stuck.

A decent truck will be as reliable as anything else you can buy, but remember they are getting on a bit, regardless how clean they normally are, expect to be replacing exhausts, CV gaiters, steering ball joints etc over time...

Hello and welcome, nice to see another "Hants" member, where abouts are ya? as you see i'm in Havant, as said the surfs a good truck, get a 3lt if possible but the 2.4 aint quite as bad as painted, make sure you give it a good test drive and watch for any overheating, do all the useual checks and when you finally get one give it the "service" of it's life, good flushing is always a good thing on a vehicle you may not the history of, new stat and cap incase and the useual filters etc, it'll last you years,

            thanks guys

thanks guys , good reading there,

can I ask , assuming I get a 3.0l what is the score with the autoboxs?

do they have a mechanical/centrifugal govenor or an electronic one?

            are they tough?

do any of them have front rear and center difflocks as standard?

what would be a good price for a nice 3.0 with aircon (and the difflocks if they have them)

I am near fareham btw, the wife used to work in havnt.

Thanks for all the help and nice to meet you all!

No - whatever the chap on eBay says You wont need them for laning anyway.

              Probably £1.5k - £2k for a 2nd gen, £2.5k upwards for a 3rd gen

Hello Fett. Welcome to the forum. A two inch suspension lift and some tyres with a reasonably aggressive tread is a reasonably cost effective combination for laning. Make sure that your truck is well maintained and you should be OK.......Cheers....Mick.

He drives a Rangey. Probably never got to the end of a lane before...

Reminds me, I was walking home from the local after going for tea there with the kids and the missus tonight and saw someone park an old Defender, get out and slide a drip tray under it before walking off.
