So let me get this straight.....

Police shot a black bloke with a gun... there is an uprising because this is deemed to be racist, so now they are stealing everything and setting stuff on fire.

Clearly I am on a massively different wave length... but I just don't get it

I hope no one here is caught up in it.

Time for mad max spec bull bars!!!

Don't know why anyone's surprised. The country contains a lot of ########s who have no respect for others, and no respect for society.

Thanks for the sentiments, I live in between the 2 areas where the rioting is going on in North London.
Please don't buy into the media bullshit, this has been brewing up for a long time.
It is a problem not just in London but up and down the country, disenfranchised youth with no education and no chance of a decent job, a society who seems to mock them and blame them but not provide them with the tools (education and training) to better them selves.
This coupled with disparity in wealth that exists can only fuel what to them seems like a hopeless situation, no chance of a job due to lack of education, very few youth clubs, not much to do except get into trouble.
Some parents don't seem to give 2 ####s how their kids grow up etc..

Now don't get me wrong I am not trying to excuse what they are doing but its a sad fact of life.
The police appear to have mismanaged the public order side, and I will await the conclusion of the IPCC investigation before making up my mind about the shooting incident.

Incidentally this is not about black and white, its about the poor and thier grievances.
          l'm FAME-ous!

Indeed, thanks for the sentiments. This is my third essentially sleepless night now. I live on the A10, just between Hackney and Tottenham, so have been under a barrage of sirens and helicopters non-stop.

For anyone that doesn't know, it's getting really quite serious now.

Tottenham never used to be the way it is nowadays. In fact this has been brewing for a very long time, since the mid 80's, and as has been said, it has nothing to do with racism.

I come from that neck of the woods having been born a stones throw from the Seven Sisters road, and my parents will tell you what a great place it was in the 60's and 70's.

The 80's (modern times) come along and it all changes bigtime. Consistent feck ups by successive governments over the last 30yrs, mass unemployment, and two generations of parents that have never worked a day in their lives while sponging the whole of thier worthless lives off the generosity of law abiding taxpayers is whats caused all the strife.

These parents certainly don't seem to give a shite any more, and their offspring certainly don't care much either hence all the wanton destruction and violence. No such thing as a peaceful demo any more because it soon turns into armageddon!! Police are there to keep the peace so as soon as they stop keeping the peace get the army in and put a stop to these numpties.

I'm all for the revolution, only a smart one please. Come the next election.......Vote for none of the above!!
                Now it's time to play!

Really hope everyone caught up in this is safe tonight, its fair to say that tonight I am not a proud englishman!

And I'm sorry but I do not agree with the above sentiments about the poor mistreated generation, we have bred a generation of now young adults which I have seen with my own eyes who neither have the want nor skills to work but expect the world to owe them a living!

What we do about this I do not know and will leave it up to the debate I am sure will come but for tonight I am disgusted with the behaviour of the inhabitants of my country...

Yep, I'm glad it's not happening in mine. But I reckon those outwith the M25 will argue your 'country' point.

There are a lot of other people that are unemployed, but you don't see them rioting. Although I am South African born, when I was unemployed I did not even consider marching, criminal acts or looting. It appears to be a criminal element within an ethnic minority and this minority tend to give the rest of that group a bad name.

                        This was reported in one of the newspapers;
A 28-year-old mother of two from nearby Enfield who gave her name as Diana X, said anger had been building among ethnic minorities for a long time because many felt police did not deal with them fairly.
“So many opportunities are being taken away from those who are working class and that tends to affect the ethnic minorities,” she said.
Looting was not justified but people were upset and saw it as a way to vent frustration on big organisations, she said.

How can looting be justified? It is my understanding that there have been a lot of work opportunities in London due to the Olympics but East Europeans had to be employed as the locals considered the work beneath them. How true that is I do nto know.

I'm from south London and lived there for 40 years. The 80's riots were justified, apart from loss of life. The London radio stations are full of people who lived through that time as I did... And this they say in unison is not the same. It's not just the media it's people who took part in the 80's that say this is groups of people/young people stealing.....plain and simple.

The wannabe rich and famous now... Jeremy Kyle... Innt mob...

No jobs??... Bollox!.... Plenty of jobs. My daughter went around for 2 weeks with a CV... Saw a place she liked to work at and kept going back...they liked her putting in that type of effort and she now works there full time.

I demonstrated in the 70's and 80's and would do the same now...but as I say this is not demonstrating.

In life you make choices..they are making the choice of picking up a brick and throwing it through a window of Currys and stealing a television.
What does that tell us?? Disaffected youth..don't make me laugh.
                          .... Which was nice.

I was sent this link which shows the affected areas. It appears the rioting is quite widespread now and not confined to a small area.
Hopefully this is a wake up call to the government to stop cutting police figures as crime is increasing not decreasing!

Just remove the bl00dy paperwork and procedure, and stick them back on the streets again. I know a couple of ex-coppers and they both say that the job has become too procedural - so much so that some minor crime goes undealt with as they know that the result is outweighed by the amount of paperwork.

Ahhh, rallying against big business eh? So smashing Dixons windows helps does it? Society *wants* their big telly, their cheap goods. Society *made* Dixons, ASDA, Tesco etc etc and the topography of our society is changing because of that. Villages are dying because folk travel to out of town retail to buy cheap.

There are things wrong with society today, obviously, but WE have created it. Not 'the Government'. We did.

Totally agree with the sentiment that a lot of folk (not all) will not help themselves these days. The safety net for those who *cant* help themselves has been raped and pillaged by the terminally lazy and dishonest and it's bred a generation of people who don't aspire to anything more than life on benefits because its easy and they can stay at home and watch their cheap TV from Dixons all day.

We taught people that *everyone* can have a big TV, and foreign holidays. What we failed to do was instil in them that these are rewards for hard work, not human rights. Deep down, those rioters are rioting because someone else has more than them. Maybe they worked for it? Ahhh, Socialism - the politics of jealousy.

I don't blame Major, or Brown, or Cameron. I blame us.
