  • My local Toyota dealer......

Yesterday i popped down to my local dealership to enquire about an oil filter.

After giving him the details and 10mins later he came back with what looked like a much smaller (half the size) filter than the Boshi one i fitted last oil service.

They wanted £20.49 all in. I didn't question it but i said no thanks, and left.

I've just had a look on Roughtrax site and they quote £17.70 inc vat for a genuine OEM filter with the non-return valve. I've no idea if there is a charge for delivery, there probably is, so factor that in and it could well be close to the dealers price.

I'm probably not happy to go back to the dealer baring in mind they pulled out what i think is the wrong filter, purely based on size. I only know it to be a large filter based on the boshi one i changed.

Roughtrax also do a non-genuine filter with non-return valve for £5.50. That's sounds very reasonable indeed if the quality is good.

If you have used one of these, is it any good?

Main reason i ask is that my boshi filter i don't think has the non-return valve and contributes to the 'oil light on at startup for a few seconds' syndrome.
    Now it's time to play!

      4. Items such as Tow bars, roll bars, large items will be charged at 15.00 + VAT

'Cos they are Very local I normally phone up to enquire about stock level and then pick the parts up.

I don't know if it would be called anal but I do oil and filter changes every 6 months.

When I have bought parts off flea bay to cut done on costs the old adage "you pays your money and takes your chance " for instance the rad cap I got off flea bay leaks so I will be off to roughtrax for a replacement.

You could also try a local parts distributor.

I often prefer to go with a specialist. Roughtrax will be my next port of call i think.

Hopefully this filter will sort my oil light on issue.

ETA: Shokenore, thanks for the heads up on postage costs.

Hmmm sorry didn't read your first post properly
How long is your oil light staying on for?
When was the oil/filter last changed
          What oil are you using?
What is the condition of the present oil?

Oil light stays on even at normal operating temps if the truck is stationary for more than a few mins. Having read a couple of posts recently my issue leads me to believe the oil is draining back into the engine and therefore takes 3-4secs to fill the filter again.

Oil change done couple of months ago. I'm doing quite a bit of mileage at the moment but it's local stuff so will do another oil change end of August 1st week or two in September. Oil at the moment looks pretty good. Not very Black and still thin on the dip stick.

When i did my first service after the drive to Spain and back the oil was very black and thick and i started to get some smoke happening too. Before that there was hardly a puff of smoke.

I'm using Halfords 10W40 Semi-Synth Diesel oil, i've got a trade card so i get a good discount. There is no smoke on normal driving or pulling away from lights/junctions, just a little puff first thing in the morning on cold start-up and then nothing all day.

ETA: It doesn't use any oil and i doubt it will need topping up before the next service. I also used some oil additive at that first service. I cannot remember what i put in as i've long since thrown the tin/bottle away. It might have been STP. I'll check see if it's still kicking around in the garage.

I've only just done Fuel and Air filters which all came with the car in a box when i bought it. Air filter looked spotless and the fuel filter looked equally clean. No water in the fuel.

I must try and coordinate so that all the filters and oils get changed every service. I just remembered, ATF is next on the to do list as well.

Changing your oil filter for a decent one sounds like a good idea!!

When I first had my dash out some scallywag had actually taken out the oil and timing belt lights

But yeah I can recommend Roughtrax.

Sorry to hear about that. Skanky beggers!!

Yep. Roughtrax it is. Really looking forward to doing the next service

Any recommends on coolant change frequency and mix ratio for ample winter/summer protection. I've usually done 50/50 with most of the cars i've had. Never had overheating, freezing or corrosion issues with any of them.

I'm not sure how many liters total the whole system takes. It's using Red Anti-Freeze at the moment.

When I inherited my truck I just changed all the fluids straight off.
I do the oil/filter every six months.
Atf every six months (not a full flush just the 2 litres from the drain plug)
Coolant was done in the spring but will be checked before winter.
I usually get 10 litres, which is enough for a full flush and change
                          Code Si147
Description Genuine Toyota long life "Red" coolant, 5 litres comes Pre-mixed to Toyota's spec of -36 degrees, just add straight into the cooling system.
                          Protects from corrosion.
*Please Note. You should never mix Green & Red Coolant. If in doubt flush the entire system.
                          Price £15.75
Does it need changing as often as I do probably not
Last time I used coolant from the local garage it was £2 for 5 litres it is still green in color.

I was thinking coolant change once a year just before winter. As i'm not 100% sure what has and hasn't been done i'll give it a go come end of October/November time. I'll stick to Red. £30 a year for coolant doesn't sound like a lot to make sure your P&J doesn't overheat or freeze to death.

The truck is too big to get in the garage so it will live outdoors forever unless i win the lottery and buy a house with a big barn or build something to indulge my passion for getting cut/smashed hands, arms and head, and grease under my fingernails

It's an oil pressure light, not oil level. As long as the light goes out, don't worry about it.

The stainer at the end of the pick up tube in the sump could be gummed up preventing the slow pressure build up.

15W40 is the oil most owners on here use. Semi-synthetic will give a lower
                              pressure reading too.

What was the reason for the additive?
