I've just had a look at a 1KZ-TE engine workshop manual and it doesn't mention an auxilliary fan. There seems to be a difference of opinion here so i'd best take a look.
Any 2nd Gen surf with A/C rad in front of the main rad has the pusher electric fan behind the grille, this comes on with the A/C, and is also auxi engine temp fan.
Some 2.4 2nd Gens have the A/C rad behind the bash palte, with 2 fans on top, that are A/C only, and the front fan is temp switched only.
I have vauge doubts about the 3.0 electric fan being temp switched now its been brought up, I've never heard one running when A/C isn't on, but 3.0's run cooler than 2.4's so you wouldn't hear it often. You can make the 2.4 one come on by shutting off the engine when its hot, then leaving the ignition on, as the temp rises it'll come on. The 3.0 dosn't seem to suffer from 'heat soak' when turned off so badly so not noticed it.

I always thought it was AC only, there isn't an extra switch to switch it on on a high temperature?
As you probably know, 2.4's have an extra switch on the filler housing, next to the temp gauge sensor, if you unplug it the fan comes on, and the block temp sensor by the oil filter.
The 3.0 has the gauge sensor at the front of the head and block temp sensor by the oil filter, so is a thermo switch short, with is why I said on reflection I'm not sure about the 3.0's front fan being an auxi cooling fan.
But the fan is there on all 2nd Gen Surfs, so I technically stand by first comment...
