  • SOme good thoughts for Poppy Dog today please, *up-updated post 26*

My Poppy dog is having spinal surgery today to remove disk material from her spinal canal which is impinging on her spinal cord meaning she dosn't know what her back legs are doing and falls over all the time.

Its a far from straightforward or risk free op, we're very worried for her.

This is her only a few week ago, she's the soppy-ist lovely-ist dog in the world......

Sure she'll be fine and out not ever ever getting bored of retrieving tennis balls again soon.

Update, with no bad news so far and big technical words if you're interested...

The surgery went well with no complications, no bleeds, etc. and she is awake although heavily drugged. They expect her to be slightly worse tomorrow due to swelling etc, but should have an indication late tomorrow/Thurs as to how well the procedure has worked.

True to form Poppy continues to surprise us all. Initially the vets were convinced the MRI would find all sorts of age related degenerative problems due the way she presented. Nope - single protrusion T13/L1 and the rest of her spine, and her hips looked like a 6yo (not 10yo). This and her attitude made her a candidate for surgery.

They expected it to be a chronic type 2 protrusion given age and breed. Nope - turns out its a Type 1.

So they changed the procedure from Lateral (modified) Copectomy to Hemilaminectomy. Their modified Copectomy combines the classic Copectomy with a hemilaminectomy as they feel that having a window into the spinal canal allows them to identify the blood vessels and cord better than working through the lateral window. They make this hole first to see what they are dealing with, and in Poppy's case they decided not to make the llateral incision at all.

Type 1's are usually acute not chronic, they are unsure if that is the case with Poppy, but it shouldnt affect the outcome.

Just got an anxious 2 days to wait and see how she gets on now, and hopefully get to see her Thursday.

                            Good luck!!

We had a similar situation with our Syberian Wolfhound (Called Hermann the German), but he was a bit older and we decided the operation was too risky.

I hope she continues to make a full recovery!
