  • Truck 'juddering' ONLY on set off with clutch (manual)

    morning folks.

    Got a weird one here.

Whenever i set off using the clutch, the truck has started to judder quite bad. Forward or reverse. As soon as the clutch is all the way out, it's back to normal, smooth as anything, at any speed, and through all the gear changes etc, no probs at all. it's only when i let the clutch out to set off?

Also, (keep forgetting to ask) whenever we're off roading, and i have to recover one of the lads, the clutch stinks like mad, like its burning. I don't ride the clutch or anything, but still stinks really bad as though i am riding it? It never smells under normal driving, only ever when towing someone out of a bad spot.

Has anyone any ideas? Clutch knackered?

    cheers

    Have a good day

Have you a solid flywheel or a girly Dual mass one?

It sounds to me like the clutch is knackered and worn out - I think it is slipping under heavy load (when you are recovering) hence the smell and is probably "varnished" which is why you're getting judder normally.

I think your going to need a new clutch, there is a modification you can do to your flywheel which might be worth finding out about too - TonyN or one of the techies will be along soon

What Slobby said. Surfs have dual mass, 4runners have solid. Swap your flywheel and all will be well.

At the moment, though, it just sounds like the clutch is goosed.

Its usually the dual mass flywheel falling apart that causes judder taking up drive.

You can usually live with it till you need to do the clutch, unless its really bad.

A new dual mass flywheel is very spendy, its cheaper to buy a 4Runner solid flywheel, and clutch kit, than it is to just buy a dual mass flywheel. The solid flywheel is just slightly noiser on tickover with the clutch up.

oh bo11ocks! this is gonna be expensive isnt it?!

I remember the fella i bought it off over a yr ago said he'd put a new clutch in due to the DMFW collapsing. i dunno what he replaced or didnt replace, but the juddering has only been doing so for about 2wks.

Tony is this an arse job to do? I dont know anything about it, but that goes with all the other jobs i've done on it, and i've managed fine so far!

Its not an arse, but gearbox is heavy if your doing it on the floor, and some of the top bellhousing bolts are a bugger to get to.

Its not technical, just need muscle.

May just be the clutch if its got a solid flywheel already, which isn't so spendy, especially if its been getting some stick offroad.

Dont mean to sound stupid, but how do i know if it has solid or dual mass?

Would he have changed for a solid when he did it?:

Just found this on RT CLUTCH KIT

                      That roughly what i need?

                          That's the kit you want.

I don't think there is a way to tell which you have until you take the 'box out. A grown up will confirm soon... RT will deliver next day, so no biggie to take the 'box out, then order the clutch.

                            Hi lads.

Still not bought a clutch yet, and it's slowly getting worse. I went down to Milners y/day. and best he can do full kit is £426!!! That is to convert to solid. Is this ok to convert to solid as i spoke to someone who advised me against it, saying it can rip the crank out? (he'd done so on a Mondeo)

I will get one over next couple wks, and am going to get in to have a look , but if i DO need a new flywheel, would you suggest buying another DM, or go solid?

                            thanks in advance

A dual mass flywheel is over £500 on its own, before you buy the clutch as well. A solid flywheel AND clutch is £375, its a no brainer..

It won't damage your crank, you're only fitting a 4Runner spec flywheel and clutch.

They are slightly noiser with a solid flywheel when engine is idling, but thats all.
