4 wheel drive engagemnet question

On my N reg KZN185 when I engage 4 x4 drive while moving slowly or even when stationary all I hear is a click of a relay and there is no satisfying clunk that is nomally associated with the engagement. The light on the dashboard indicates that it should be in 4 x 4 drive but I am not sure.
Is there any way that you can confirm it is 4 wheel drive? Don't really want to try off road and then get stuck because 4 x 4 is not engaged. Thanks.

You could try putting it on a lift, putting it into drive and touching the accelerator; in 2wd only the rear wheels should move, and in 4wd all 4 should move.

If the 4 greens are solid, ( not flashing) its engaged. You dont really get a satisfying clunk, but it still works.

Thanks. Only last Surf which was a R reg, you coudl hear it engage. Not a loud clunk, but enough to know it was engaged.
It is in for a major service on Monday so will ask them to check.
