Easy Tiger. I was only proffering my opinion - each to their own and all that. I agree that it looks pretty cool in rally get-up. But the standard Mk 1 just leaves me cold. Maybe its a generation thing. Maybe I am missing something.

Either way it wasn't personal. And anyway it was Apache that started the MK I Escorts are crap thing, before you get all heavy on my ignorant English ass... Take it out on him!

I didn't take it personally. I responded to your comment, that's all.

all those classic rust buckets remind me of an apprenticeship lying on my back setting myself on fire with oxy-acetyleen gear - oooh those were the days never again though.

If you like your Escorts you should drive around where I'm from. Its almost as if every other person owns one. Which is why I bought a MK1 XR2 rather than an Escort. But even those are fetching silly money now.

I like the old cars, restoring them is somewhat of a passion of the owner. Something to get involved with.

Functionality wise, then I can accept "OMG ther' crap!". As, lets face it, they don't have any creature comforts of our newer vehicles.

But if I'm honest, hearing a set of twin Webers and engine, drivetrain and road noise - there's no comparison.
                  Oh Nana, what's my name?

I suppose it's depends on what you look for in a car or what you want a car to do.

There are many cars I would love to own that are most certainly form over function. I have no use for lotus type 22 but I could spend many, many happy hours polishing it and looking at it.

I would love to own a D type Jag, Cobra, Fastback Mustang and so on.

I would buy a c220, clk270, A4 or A5 as a family, daily driver the 220 and the A4 being function over form and the other two a happy blend of both IMHO.

So let's all just enjoy what we drive and what we aspire to drive/own and let everyone else do the same.

No, but I've driven most of the best ones. Brakes don't work, steering doesn't work, seats aren't comfortable, gearbox is awful, controls are in the wrong place, windows don't open, boot leaks etc etc.

Don't get me wrong, I adore them, but they are pretty rubbish by modern standards.

Didn't Del boy have a Ca-Pri Gear like that one?? Lol

My Dad had a 2.8 injection Capri and used to love it to bits.

One of the guys next door used to have a Tickford Capri too, seem to remember that was pretty cool.

Probably worth a few bob now too!

I met her at the launch of the Ur Quattro Sport (the short wheelbase one) at Warrington Audi main dealer. My dad had a Quattro and got an invite. I met her and Hannu Mikkola.

She's about 4ft tall, but was quite cute, and had a GREAT car!

That's the charm of classics, modern cars might whisk you from A to B with little effort and work properly, but I've always enjoyed a car that need a wee bit of work to drive it.
